Engine shut down while driving and would not start again
Engine shut down while driving and would not start again
So I bought this 2004 Honda Civic LX 2 months ago. Didn't have any issues initially. Then it overheated during a long trip. No engine light on. Let it cool, added coolant, then no problem. A week or 2 later it overheated in traffic. Again, let it cool, checked coolant and oil. Oil has always been fine. But coolant is low after it overheats. If I put in in neutral it starts to cool on its own... Anyway, engine light eventually came on. Took it to a shop, they said head gasket. There was no sign to me of a head gasket problem. No oil in coolant or vice-versa and no leaking around engine. They cleared the engine light so no codes could be pulled. Had 2 other mechanics look at it and they couldn't find anything wrong. Then a couple days ago I'm driving and with no warning the engine just shut off. All electrical was still on. Also the oil light came on. I checked oil and coolant both were fine. No overheating, no knock, no indication something was wrong at all. It wouldn't start again. It turns, makes a sort of grinding like it's gonna start but doesn't. I towed it to a mechanic that already looked at it. Any ideas? Did it seize? Is it done for?

You are losing coolant. Is your overflow reservoir gaining coolant?
The coolant does not go into the oil in these cars. Exhaust gases push all the coolant into the overflow reservoir. Traditional tests will yield nothing.

No, the reservoir does not have extra coolant after it overheats. Both the reservoir and the radiator needed coolant after it overheated. The thing is, it stopped overheating after the first Mechanic cleared the check engine light. When it shut off it wasn't overheating and the coolant and oil levels were fine.

I wrote this thread because i don't like to parrot same thing day in day out (yeah, it's that frequent)

no coolant in oil? of course.
These engines do the opposite, exhaust gases pushes coolant out. You are never going to have it in oil until the gasket is very bad.
this is the proper test you should do.
ah, here i am parroting the same thing again

The Mechanic is saying my #6 ECU fuse is blown or shorted out. I have very limited knowledge of cars. I can fix some basic thing but definitely can't fix this on my own. How much should the repairs cost me? Just don't want to get taken advantage of. Also, somehow my lower control arm is now broken... Could it have already been broken and I didn't notice while I was driving or could the tow guy or Mechanic have broken it?
