2005 Civic - Intermittent P0344 and P0340 - Bad camshaft pos sensor?

Hey guys,

I have a 2005 Civic LX that has been throwing the P0344 code very a few times now (and one time the P0340 code), which throws the engine in limp mode and even kills the power.
This happened the first time a year ago, i turned off the car, unplugged and replugged the sensor, cleared the code and was able to drive off.

The next couple times I have also done the same: turned the car off, unplugged, and cleared the code.
It first happened in the Summer, did not happen at all over the winter, and has started happening again this summer.
It seems to happen most when I am in slow bumper-to-bumper traffic, so I suspect it has to do with the cam position sensor overheating.

Should I just replace the cam position sensor, or are there other things to check or replace? (like timing belt, or crank positionsensor).
And is there any trustworthy place to find an OEM cam position sensor? When I google Honda 37840-RJH-006it seems like there's a bunch of sketchy knock-offs being sold...

Thanks guys

Majestic Honda or hondapartsnow

Alternatively, you can just get it directly from Denso

Thanks, do you know the Denso part number?
Rock auto is also showing an NTK part EC0139 -- is this OEM also?

The part number is universal. Either Denso (Honda’s manufacturer for sensors) or Honda. Nothing else works.

Thanks - that makes sense.

Another question: Is it dangerous/harmful to drive like this?
Once I reset the code, on my OBD-2 scanner it isn't saying there are any misfires, but is there a risk of permanent damage if there is something else going on (like running with poor timing, etc.)?

If you continue to manually bypass limp mode, then you could do damage

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.
What's odd is according to the P0344/P0340 troubleshooting guides for other models (i can't find it for 7th gen civic), it states reset the ECM, then check of MIL turns on.

in my cases, since it will run fine (I had to drive back home 3 hours from a road trip after resetting the MIL once), it suggests it is intermittent.

The troubleshooting guides say: "Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at CMP Sensor A and the ECM/PCM.n"

So does this mean i should check connections first, or can a bad/failing sensor produce intermittent P0344 as well?

if it did not occur before, but the incidence rates are going up, the sensor or wiring itself are on the way out.
Like any appliance or machine.
Replace once with OEM sensor.
If that does not work, either bad sensor or something else. So replacement OEM can go up to 2 times. something else is also possible. Test, test, test. We can't test for you.
