EGR Bolts Stripped...

Hi all, 04 LX 5SPD 203K
I was planning to replace the rear cam cap because it was slightly leaking. I went to take off the 12mm nuts and they are rusted in there good. I tried using a six point socket but, when I give it enough force, it skips. I do not want to round the nut. Any advice on how I can get those nuts off? It's a tight space. I thought I could slip out the cap but, there's not enough room. I guess that's a newbie thing.. LOL.

Re: EGR Bolts Stripped...

you could let the bolt soak over night in a release fluid, like liquid wrench
is heat possible? small torch? get a turn loose, then re tighten, then a bit more loose and re tighten,, work it until it feels like it wont snap.

Re: EGR Bolts Stripped...

I soak them with PB Blaster. I will try again tomorrow morning. If they become more stripped, I will bang a 12 point 11mm socket on them and force them out. I can dremmel them out but, not sure if the bolts are replaceable. Are the bolts part of the block?

Re: EGR Bolts Stripped...

They're replaceable, just need to find the right diagram and you can order them from the dealer. Can also try welding a nut on, the heat will help break it free. Also remove as much as you can to get better access

I have done this a few times with other bolts. 11 mm or 7/16" is slightly bigger but still smaller than 12 mm.

Re: EGR Bolts Stripped...

I was able to get the EGR off nut..., the nuts didn't break free, the bolts did. The nuts are still on the bolts! Did I snap the bolts? Looks like I can screw the bolts back in and the EGR will clamp down fine. My question is, is there a gasket for the EGR valve? I didn't see one. I watched a video for an EGR cleaning and they didn't have a gasket either. Should I throw in RTV, or leave it as is?

Sounds like they're studs, and I'm not sure on the gasket, I would think there's supposed to be one

After inspecting the bolts, they are studs. I was able to remove the studs. The trick to not stripping the nuts is by making sure the socket is absolutely straight on the nut and PB Blaster overnight. I guess there is no gasket. I cleaned up the valve really good and swapped out the cam cap.
I appreciate everyone's help..

Re: EGR Bolts Stripped...

Just checked, looks like there is supposed to be a gasket. Someone must have been in there before. Part number is in the picture.
