Broken Thermostat

My car would overheat intermittently so I decided to change the thermostat. That's when I realized it had broken. I don't see the broken pieces anywhere. Where could it have ended up?

That looks more like someone cut it out.
Just buy the car? I'm going to guess the head gasket is blown and that was their way of hiding it/dealing with it

I found it strange that a thermostat broke like that. I had the car for about 5 years now. It just now started running hot intermittently.
