Engine shut down at 60 mph and will not start.

2004 civic lx 4door. Is a daily ride. Has 218000 miles.
was driving at 60 mph and it just quit running. Like you had turned the key off. It has been running great. Now it will not start. It try's to start...sputtering for a few seconds then stops. no difference if you pump the pedal or hold it down or no pedal at all it still sputters then quits.
pulled the fuel line off the rail and it was pumping fuel good.

Not sure where to go from here. Going to check spark but it does fire to make it sputter. Will check timing Mark's next.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Engine shut down at 60 mph and will not start.

timing belt snapped, slipped, or jumped time would be my guess.
get the upper belt cover off and set #1 to tdc to see if the engine is still in proper time.
Compression test is also in order to see if you have any bent valve. considering this happened at 60 mph you probably do

Thanks for the reply.
Was just messing and unplugged the switch that goes through the cover on the left side and the car started and it stayed running. Don't know for sure what the item it is called.. tryed to pull the cover off but don't know the trick to it so I can get ti the switch to replace it. If it needs to be replaced.

That wire harness goes to the crank sensor through lower timing belt cover.

Yes, do not buy aftermarket, only buy OEM Honda. You got lucky that the timing belt didn't fail

Re: Engine shut down at 60 mph and will not start.

I had replaced the TDC sensor with OME Honda part. It is doing the same. If I unplug it it will run ok. When I rev it to 3100 it starts missing like it hit the Rev Limiter. It idles fine. I did not drive it so don't know how it would react as far as power..

Re: Engine shut down at 60 mph and will not start.

I have not. My thought is if it runs fine with no missing or sputtering it would not be timing. I will check the timing tonight. What is the easiest/best way to check the timing.. Thanks.

Re: Engine shut down at 60 mph and will not start.

Ok so finally got back to this issue. That life thingy got in the way.
So checked the timing and it appears to be off a notch also noticed that the belt is loose on both sides of the cam gear, shouldn't it be tight like at least a fan belt. You had said if it was off a notch that the belt and tensioner needs to be replaced. Will the tensioner keep that belt tight? The belt was able to slip off the cam gear and move the crank and aligned the timing Mark's . Don't know if the picture's help.

Thanks

Part link (honda genuine oem) tensioner: https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuin...iming_belt,,14

Timing belt: https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuin...iming_belt,,10

You may want to order a lower timing cover seal as well: https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuin...timing_belt,,4

I don't think it's off a tooth but yeah it definitely shouldn't be loose.
