Newbie - 2002 Ex Coupe owner
2002 Civic Ex 1.7, Coupe, Automatic, 167000 miles
Back ground. $500 car, with no maintenance records.
I just paid the technician to replace the;
- timing belt, Gates RPM, maintenance
- water pump, Aisin, maintenance
- camshaft seal & crankshaft seal, Dayco, for fun
- spark plugs, Honda (IZFR6K11), maintenance
- timing belt tensioner kit, Gates, maintenance
- oxygen sensor, Denso, maintenance
- valve cover gasket with grommets, JPN, maintenance
- power steering belt, Gates RPM, maintenance
Apparently, the eBay sellers website is wrong for the Alternator / Air Conditioning belt. The seller sent me a K060338RPM / 6PK858.
The technician (I'm in South Korea), is indicating to me the number 2 sparkplug port is loose.
Can someone provide me the correct part number in a Gates RPM belt for the Alternator / Air Conditioner belt?
Is a Helicoil an option for the sparkplug port? Replace the cylinder head 😭😭😭? Any other thoughts, ideas?
Next on the list;
- replace the Front Upper Strut Bearing Plates, the rubber bushings are blown out.
- replace the Front Lower Control Arms, the rubber bushings are blown out.
I'm planning on replacing the strut assembly from Detroit Axle.
I'm planning on replacing the lower control arms & upgrading to a "Red Stiffer Bushing." (the roads here suck)
I'm planning on installing two new Timken wheel bearings.
Any recommendations on better parts? Anything else to consider while the technician is in there?
How would you recommend the bearing replacement? Replace the hub also???
Future Maintenance;
- drain & refill the Automatic Transmission a few times.
Has anyone installed an inline ATF filter? If so, where did you put the filter? Input or Output hose to the transmission? Is there a bracket I need to make / buy to secure the transmission filter?
- replace the instrument cluster lights, some of the lights are burned out.
- replace the accessory buttons, some of the backlights are burned out.
Any recommendations on going about this? I've looked at afew YouTube videos.
Is my car a Vtec engine? The ignition coils cover is missing.
Thank You

Your EX model is a Vtec.Buy a Honda Service Manual, plus there's
write-ups (on various Honda forums) and YouTube videos for any type of repair you are wanting to do.
If the cylinder's spark plug hole threads are stripped/loose the this product is one type of fix: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...iABEgKkX_D_BwE (find the correct size) or TimeSert brand or similar will work.

GATES K060388RPM {#38920PLR003, 38920PLR004, 6PK986} Racing Micro-V High Performance V-Ribbed Belt; Black, Alternator and Air Conditioning
They should be able to do something with the head. If not, a junkyard has always worked for me. Just get it resurfaced if you do get a used one.
Filter is inside the trans on that year I believe. I had an 02 but never installed a inline. My 02 had 199k on it before trading it. I have a 2012 now and it has a inline strainer. Looks kinda like a fuel filter. You could probably figure something out with one of those. But I will tell you Honda doesnt consider that a maintenance item. But I will probably change mine anyway.
Yes you have a vtec.
Dude, you need a book on your car! LOL!

I'm appreciating the information so far. It's nice to know what actual engine I have. Thank you.
I'll admit, I'm not going to buy a repair manual for the car.
- I have no place to work on the car.
- I work 60 plus hours a week.
- My tools were stolen while I was overseas (currently in Korea), plus it's my dime to ship everything back stateside, when ever my contract is over.
- Its way more convient to pay the automotive technician about $45.00 an hour, who has all the tools & a lift to do the work.
- Also, there is no way it'd be financially feasible to ship this USA spec 2002 Civic EX back to the states.
- If I did buy a manual, there is also a language barrier for the Korean technician to decipher what it says.
----- Convince me why I need a manual in this case.
Now I need to decide what Helicoil Kit / Plug Saver Kit / Time Sert Kit to buy. Looks like I'll be watching some YouTube videos & reading reviews.
I see the mistake on the eBay sellers for the website. I typed in Alternator Belt & assumed with the EX trim, it came standard with A/C. I'm pretty sure A/C in a 2002 EX is standard in that trim package, but I don't know... In digging around other websites, I see some sellers / brick and mortar stores actually spell out Alternator Belt, w/o Air Conditioning. Thank You DYNAMICAL for providing that belt information.
Now to figure out the suspension clunking. I saw what bushings were blown, so I'll be posting those questions in the suspension section.
Thank You
