Engine light question

Hi, I am new to the forum so please forgive me if I am not following protocol
I am a long time Honda civic owner (On my 4th one) putting literally hundreds of thousands of miles on them, (never a serious problem), my current civic is a 2002 which we purchased new in 2002 (I get my wifes when she get a new one) I have a question that I hope you can help me with (I did a search but not being a mech. I don't really know what words to use).

Here goes I hope I can make myself clear, the other day my engine light came on, NOT the maintenance light, this lite is the one on the left & is a picture of an engine. I looked in my Manuel & it said it could be that the gas cap was not put on correctly, I check & yes it was not tighten, so I screwed it in until it clicked a couple of times, I went and filled up with gas & made sure the cap was properly screwed on, The light is still on, can anyone help with this? or could you direct me to the proper area on the forum to go to.
Thanks msn

Re: engine light question??

Best option: You should reset it with a scan tool, which is free at parts stores like autozone.

An option but may have radio issue: disconnect the negative battery cable for a couple minutes, that will reset the computer but may cause your radio to reset needing you to get the radio code.

If it comes back on go get it scanned for free at autozone or other stores that offer free scanning.

Re: Engine light question

That is the Check Engine Light (CEL). Your car is alerting you that something is wrong with it's operation. If you go to a local autoparts store and have them connect a scanner (or spend about $45 on a scanner and connect it yourself under the driver side of the dashboard), you can get the correct error code. Once you know the error code you will have a better idea of what is wrong.

If you get the code and post it on this site you will probably get better help because just the light by itself does not provide any information unless something is wrong with the car when you drive it and you can describe it in detail.
