Keeps blowing the voltage regulator
Keeps blowing the voltage regulator
EDIT: in case it matters, passenger window can only be moved down by driver's side switch, but passenger side can move window up, just not down. Drawing too much power possibly?
EDIT: I have a 2002 Civic EX 1.7 VTEC 2 door Civic Automatic
I have gone through four alternators now in four months.
here is the long, sordid tale...
battery light came on, I went straight to Oreilleys and had it tested, they told me voltage regulator in alternator is bad. Fine. Replaced alternator. Enter problem one: person who did it didn't tighten the bolt in all the way, but I didn't know that. Belt kept snapping, on the third time I figured it has to be something besides the belt, checked, sure enough AC compressor was seized causing belt to snap. Bypassed AC with smaller belt and just figured one day, I'll fix it.
Car starts doing weird stuff electrically, and is in limp mode, I drive it that way for two months, replacing alternator twice more and battery cables and terminals, alternator plug, valve cover gasket, idle air control valve, spark plugs, I think that is it, anyways, read on here that it was prolly the ECU but didn't want it to be so I tried everything else. Decided to drive it to a reputed mechanic while it still drive. He diagnosed the ECU being fried, replaced it with a used one, and voila car is better. Only thing is the SRS light has been on on the dash since the ECU replacement. Otherwise, WAS fine until yesterday. Driving, suddenly turn signal flashes really fast when I turned in somewhere and lights go dim, and only for a second, then nothing else happens. For a few minutes. Driving along, decide to go to my fave beach, as I am parking, car dies and won't restart, just clicks a bunch of times. Hook up the jump box, it starts but wont stay started without jump box on it, just chug a lugs until dying a couple seconds later. Friend comes and charges battery for me with vehicle, it gets me about 35 miles down the road, dies, and as it is dying, the relay in the glove box was clicking really fast, up until the moment I shut the car off, even though car was dead and I was coasting to side of road. Another jump and quick charge, I make it about 20 miles, repeat. Finally made it home. About to head to Oreilleys to have them test everything again but my friend took positive cable off battery and it died right away, said that means it's the alternator. Also, battery is showing 14 when electrical tested, in case that is significant. Why do I keep blowing my alternator? Specifically it has been the voltage regulator everytime. Checked stereo wiring, had place that put it in pull it out and check their work, it's fine, I'm thinking that since it is an aftermarket stereo that maybe it is drawing too much power? Any ideas?

Re: Keeps blowing the voltage regulator
Sounds like some broken wires in the door harnesses for the window issues.
these cars hate aftermarket electronics like alternators

Re: Keeps blowing the voltage regulator
Tell me how. I have a multimeter. Is that enough to figure it out? Idk I'm going in uneducated on these matters
Also, can you describe what exactly a short is? I know the term and I know what I assume it to mean, but I could be wayyy off mark...
