A/C compressor clutch?

A/C compressor clutch?
My battery died. Switched to a good one and tested - drained 3.5 amps w/o engine running. Swapped out fuses one at a time. Turned out to be the A/C fan/compressor - I can even hear the clutch (+ the relay) engage when I close the circuit from the battery.
What could be the reason for this?
Can I just remove the fuse to disable the A/C compressor and still drive the car safely?
