Is P1298 code safe to drive with?
Is P1298 code safe to drive with?
As far as I can tell, it should be. I don't get battery overheat codes and the alternator was putting out 13.8V at idle after the code popped up today.
A search leads me to believe this is the fault of the electric load detector failing/failed. The part is not in town, but I have one on order to be delivered Wednesday.
Is this car safe for my wife to drive to and from work 'till then? It seems like with this failing, there shouldn't be much in the way of an actual problem, as long as the battery and alternator have passed their functions tests, but I'm sure someone here knows for sure.

Test your alternator first, then report back. Do some reading and start at this link.

Be sure to check voltage @ 3000 rpm with no load. If it’s going over 15volts then no, it’s not safe to drive unless you have rideshare app ready to go and your okay with replacing a blown out ECU.
If it’s still under 14.6 volts it’s safe enough.

ELD is a $20 part and super easy to swap out. Just swap it. I had this code on my 2002 and swapping it out fixed the issue

Thanks, guys! Voltage at 3K and 5K was 14.2 ish or so. I don't think two to three days will bother anything, as I'm convinced it's simply the ELD failing.
I purchased the Honda ELD and have it en route. Should be here tomorrow and I'll install it after work!

It’s not a Phillips bolt, those are JIS which looks like a Phillips but the profile is different and the torque needed will strip it out if you try to use Phillips.
Not really a issue if you disconnect the battery and use a socket , but you don’t want to be spinning a socket on that if it’s live.
