Compressor leak
Compressor leak
I have a 2016 civic and the air conditioner has quit blowing cold. Knowing about the extended warranty on the confessor problem it was taken to the local dealership and after paying to have the diagnostic run, they claim they ran a dye test and the compressor has a leak. The location of the leak wasn’t stated. The coat for the repair to replace the compressor is $1800 which I immediately balked at an left. The system was recharged and blows fine after a few days. Reading more about this issue I’ve seen that the compressors fail at a high rate due to bad design. I’ve also read that the condenser issue can lead to a compressor leak. The dealership has now offered to cut the repair bill in half after claiming to call corporate and they agreed to cover the other half. I haven’t told them what I’ve learned about the condenser causing compressor issues. My question is, knowing that the new compressor also has a good chance of going bad, how could I find out if the condenser is causing the problem, which if true the dealership could do the end tire job under the extended warranty? Also, has anyone ever heard of a dealer calling corporate and getting them to cover half a repair bill? I’ve certainly never heard of it. The entire thing seems suspect to me. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: Compressor leak
Wow, I wish I had tried to get them to pay for half.
I have the Gen 10 AC issue in my 2018. AC went out, took it to dealer and they said it's not only the condenser, but the compressor is leaking as well. Car is a 2018 with under 50K. Dealers will absolutely soak you for whatever dime they can get:
Service advisor calls and tries to explain how the repair will only be about $2700 because they are replacing the condenser under warranty (SB 19-091) I asked for an itemized estimate by email. They want to replace the compressor clutch and coil as well with zero explaination in mechanics notes about it being damaged or inoperable ($450) They were also going to charge me $368 to recharge the AC system.
I asked the SA why in the worlk I would pay to recharge the AC when it is clearly included in SB 19-091. Momentary silence....
I also asked why in the world would I replace the $450 clutch and coil when the mechanic never tested it or said anything about it failing - it's only 3 years old.
So now I'm only on the hook for $2k to fix Honda's knowingly-troubled AC. Save your reciepts for the next class-action filed in May.
