Angry Engine Wire Harness: Rodent Damage to Harness

Hi,

I have a 4 year old Honda Civic 2016 35k miles and yesterday when I started the car I got a few messages on my dashboard:
-road departure mitigation system problem
-adaptive cruise control system problem
-engine emission system problem

I took my car to Honda today and they opened the engine and they said the Engine Wire Harness was damaged, probably because of an animal like a rat or something, so they want to charge me $2,400 to replace it.

Does this sound correct? I bought a Honda because people said there was barely maintenance, but every 6 months I have a bomb like this. I am really upset because I don't understand about cars and I definitely don't trust the Honda dealership. They just want to make money, that I know for sure by my own experience.

I am very frustrated with this car and I don't know what to do. Can someone kind of suggest me what is the best option? I thought about taking the car to another local mechanic and do the service with them as it is probably going to be cheaper.

Thanks!

Re: Engine Wire Harness: Rodent Damage to Harness

Depending on how they want to to repair it (whole harness replacement or repair individual wires) that price is probably pretty accurate. Either way it's a labour intensive job and labour is expensive. Independent shop my be a little cheaper, but they probably wouldn't replace the entire harness.
you need to do something about the rodent problem or they're going to keep damaging the car

The same thing happened to my 2016 Civic. Dealer wanted 2700 to fix, replacing the entire harness. They said it would take 15 hours to fix at $113 an hour. Took it to my local mechanic who laughed at that estimate with the comment, "NOTHING takes 15 hours to fix." He repaired it for $800, leading me to the realization that there ARE honest mechanics and also I will never take it to the dealership again. By the way, this car is the worst I've ever had in terms of workmanship and materials. It looks cool, though. No more new Hondas for me.

Dealer has to warranty the repair work, your mechanic does not. Even for the company I work for the repair techs are not allowed to fix certain harness, they must be replaced.

Go by a cheaper car if you want to see the quality difference. It's hardly Honda's fault a critter chewed through some wiring on your car. You're allowed to have your opinion though.

Re: Engine Wire Harness: Rodent Damage to Harness

you'd need to find a local mechanic that's good with wire harness repair. Local shop labor prices tend to be cheaper than dealership labor prices, at least in my observation

I have the same problem with my 2017 Honda Civic. The check engine light came on and the diagnostic tests shown rodent damage to the wiring harness. I have discovered that Honda (and Toyota) used a soy-based coating on the wiring harness, which attracts rodents. I am having the wiring replaced and I am going to have an under hood rodent repeller and deterrent installed to hopefully prevent damage to the new harness. The device is inexpensive ($28.00) and reviews have generally been good.
