Should I get a buffer for waxing?
Is it worth it? Would it damage the coat if used improperly? Are there any brands/models that are especially good?

I don't think you should get one unless you kinda know what you're doing. You could definatly ruin the clear coat/paint on your car if used improperly.
I suggest you just do it by hand and save some money. It's a little more time consuming, and a bit of a work out but really, you probably won't use it enough to get your money's worth.

buffers are only good for applying..just don't leave it in any spots for very long, you'll burn thru the clear-coat..
for polishing off def. use the hand method..
front to rear on all horizontal surfaces and up/down on the verticals..
