Type of Oil to Use

Hey I need to get my first oil change done and I want to use fully synthetic. I called honda and they cried that I shouldnt because they dont stock it but they couldnt give me any other reason not to use it. They also said the 5W20 is a semi-synthetic, Anything think there's any problem using fully synthetic? Mobil 1 or something? It should surpass factory needs I assume?

all you have to do is buy the synthetic oil yourself..leave it in the front seat when you get your oil change....and tell them to use your oil when doing the oil change....

Mobil 1 Synthetic don't have 5W20 last time I checked. What's our other option in terms of full synthetic?

fullly synthetic doesn't come in 5w20........ 5w30 is a better oil......

synthetic also better for extreme temps like what we're having now..... real cold.... and real hot in the summer.

stillmatik...... i can do that??.... how much oil does a oil change need???

Thanks for the info. Anyone know who makes a 5w20 in the synthetic? I dont want to use the 30 because it can potenially void the warranty since the engine calls for the 5w20. You need the 20 rating to help with the extreme temperatures and 5w30 is better in the summer cause its a little thicker.

I would never pay for someone to do an oil change let alone buy the oil myself and have honda change it for me. I can do it myself no problem

As for the amount of oil It wont take more than 4 litres of oil. Usually they take about 3.7 litres if you change the oil and filter.

But I have tip for some of the people out there who change oil themselves...after you do the first oil change you can figure out exactly how much you use.... the next time you change your oil you can take the leftover oil and pour it in the filler while you have drain plug and filter off. If you watch you will see all sort of extra crud get flushed out with the extra oil This is less crud for your engine to deal with!

Hey bluetroll check out the DIY section... there are links there on how to change your oil.

If you have the time, and the tools I reccomend doing it yourself. Not only is it a big savings but it also is much better than when done anywhere else.

When you do it yourself you can take the time to let all of the oil possible drain out. If you jack the car on the one side if can put and angle on the oilpan and get even more of the nasty stuff out. The places you take your car to be serviced, make money by servicing you and everyone else. If they can do it quicker than they make more money....so they usually dont let your car drain and drain....they wait till its just close to done..button it up and send you on your way.

My Civic is the first car I have owned new and that I am going to put synthetic in, but if you use the type honda reccomends and buy the filter yourself you can do it for like 20 bucks. My girlfriend goes to some crap *** jiffy lube or something to have it done and it costs her 50 bucks a change....she says she gets some extra engine warranty from them....(which she will need driving a ford) I think if you count up all the $$ you save doing it yourself it would more than pay for any possible breakdown we might have.

Anywho if you have any other questions about changing your oil just ask away....

HEY CHIGGA- I saw your note...you might want to check your manual a little closer. I live not to far away from you and if you check it you will see we are in the "severe service" category. You should be changing the oil every 8000 km....perhaps you might be able to get away with 16000 in the summer and if its all highway but I wouldnt risk it.....

As for the maintenance light....there is a procedure to turn it off ourselves..I think it involves pushing in the odometer button and cycling the ignition or something...search the posts..there is info about it here already posted.
