Shaking with winters
Shaking with winters
I got my winter tires put in with some 15 inch rims and I am getting the shakes. More so in the steering wheel than the car itself. The tires are Nokian
Hakkapeliitaa I bought of craigslist for 140. The shaking starts at around 110..and progressively gets worse the faster I go. Weird thing is, the shaking subsides a little bit at times when i stay within a particular speed.
Any suggestions?
Thanks Dudes

Yah they were balanced when the tires were mounted on the rims.
Im thinking...its either the balancing, lugs are not tight enough, or rims is bent. I hope it will be the cheaper of the bunch..

if the wheel shakes at high speed its a bad balance. just because you had them balanced, doesnt mean it was done right. lug nuts should be all at the proper torque, but that problem would affect the brakes (warp the rotors) and cause shaking while braking only.
If the wheel was warped, you'd get a more pronouced rumble/shake at all speeds.
Lugs nuts, probably as well.
Most likely it's the wheel weights (i.e. not balanced.)
Since putting on my black steelies with winter rubber, my car is more stable at speeds over 110km/h than on my OEM alloys + stock rubber. I found out why when I was cleaning my alloys: one of the wheel weights fell off! I have no idea how, but it did; all it left was a square patch where the weight used to be, and all that remains is the sticky tape that held the weight.

off?....did u mean on....
I ended up getting proper lugs and another balancing...and it solved the major shaking issues (thanks Ivan from igarage.ca).
There is still a tad of a vibration..so im going to get some hub rings the next paycheque.

yes. hub rings off.... you dont need 'em for stock steelies...... the hub rings are usually needed for aftermarket rims
but since your problem is fixed, it shouldnt be a problem then

I had spacers on mine for the summer rims and left them on when I put on my steel wheels/winter tires. Vibration at the same speed 110km/h or so. Took of the spacers and no problems. I should have known better but oh well, If you have spacers on, definitely take them off.
