Need a new suspension, need your inputs
Hey
I have 01 Civic EX Coupe and I still have the original suspension. I'm extremely tired of my front suspension ALWAYS breaking and I decided not to replace with honda again (even if still under warranty) and put some better shocks. I do not look foward to drop my car, I only want a comfort ride and tight suspension for a fair price.
What do you suggest?
and by the way, I need extemely resistant shocks cuz I live in Montreal and the roads are ugly with a lot of huge holes.
The garage told me that Monroe Sensa-Trac could be good.
I will only replace the 2 front shocks.
Thanks,
Frank

Have you looked into the KYB GR2? Also I believe Tokico has something in the OEM-replacement line.
Monroe's sound like the brand that Canadian Tire carries...
I don't think you'll get any feedback on those brands on this board
What's your budget? The brands recommended on this board will probably cost you about $600(??) alone just for parts, no install..
It may not be just the shocks either.... The bushings for the suspension, engine mounts, could be old and tired (dried out, etc.) and could also be a cause for the horrible suspension...
Personally, I still haven't figured out what to replace on my EL... Suspension is horrible, I feel every bump, but no idea what to replace - OEM shocks replaced twice up front, but on last check, they are not leaking... Im' at 115km.

Monroe Sensa-Trac = $250 each tax included, which I find expensive.
FurBull and I seem to have the same problem...
So far, replacing the 2 front shocks only will cost me about $600.
As for my budget, I want to spent the lowest as possible!
Anyway, it looks like replacing the 4 shocks will cost me over $1000, so I guess i'll just go at the dealership and change it under the warranty for the 6th time.

Wow, I just found this thread and I am in kinda the same boat... except I've never had my shocks replaced on my '02
Question for the OP, have you been successful in getting your shocks replaced by Honda after your 60K km warranty ended, or do you have an extended warranty? 6 replacements? geez...
Do you need to replace springs when you install new (oem or aftermarket shocks) ? and is it the shock or the spring that lowers the ride? or both?
sorry if I sound dumb, I'm pretty much a suspension newb, I just know mine is quite noisy when going over bumps, especially noticeable driving at lower speeds...
Canadian Tire does carry Monroe Sensa-Track shocks. I haven't called for a price yet.
I went to the Monroe site and got a p/n for the civic, 71434 for the fronts, it sells for about $100 USD
hdave, where can I find more info on the kyb agx group buy for $650 ?

I just ordered the Tokico Matching Suspenion for my 2001 civic sedan off ebay.
4 x Tokico HP Blues Struts
4 x Tokico 1" Lowering springs
All for $485 USD Shipped. Great price, I looked for Tokico Blues alone at pacific mall and other stores and the cheapest I got quoted was $560 for struts alone.

also, if i'm not mistaken the oem spring part numers for the back are not the same for the sedan and for the coupe. i read somewhere that the lowering kits for the tokico's are for the coupe. can anyone shed some light on this?

Is specifically designed for Sedan's, I think the coupe is HPK 307 or 308 something like that.
Before I bought them I did some reasearch and found that yes they make these for sedan's not a universal set for both coupe and sedan.
As for customs and shipping charges I had them shipped to my GF in Buffalo as she goes to school there and she brought them back for me.
Overall cost was $575 canadian for 4 struts and 4 springs... pretty dang good price.
I will get back to you guys when I get them installed, I will most likely have them installed by AXXE a member on this forum.

I was looking around and found the complete set of KYB Gr-2 Shocks & Springs on eBay for $425 USD + shipping, the drop with these is 1.5" but they are universal (not specific for sedan), plus the consensus seems to be the Tokico Blues are better. And not that much more $ either.

still a great deal. let us know how it goes, espcially with the dropped suspension. i decided to get the kyb gax for 650 instead of the tokico hp's for 550. i decided not to lower the car though. Thread
