Where to get new battery?

I need a new battery for my 2002 civic si, what brand and where to buy it? I don't want to spend a fortune on one, something that is good enough all year long. I bought the kirkland one at costco but the connectors are on the opposite side of the battery and if i turn it around it would block my hood stick from going into place. How are canadian tire batteries? How much CCA should I look to at least? Thanks.

You could always go to the dealership and pick one up. I had to replace mine earlier this year and costed under $100

Get an Optima battery.... top of the line. Costco carries them.

If you're not getting the OEM dealership battery, make sure it's the EXACT same size - as you already found out, little differences can make it a headache.

I remember Telly mentioned his Optima battery was super huge, and he had to smash that bloody sucker in hard.... And that he couldn't fit the tie-down on ...Maybe he got a bigger one than stock?

I went to the dealer and got an OEM one after factoring in the headache of getting a Motomaster from Canadian Tire - I already paid them 1hr's labour to do a darned 'alternator test'.... May as well have them install one...

the costco one was the exact same size, but the problem was that the +/- connectors were on opposite sides and the cable from the car won't stretch to it.

aslong as its the same size it should fit. i only paid $43 for it at costco and it had better CCA on it then the one that cost double at CT.

They must have given you the wrong battery if the post are on the wrong side. You don't have to get the exact same size battery. My optima yellow top is bigger than stock, I had some trouble getting that sucker in, but it went in fine.

I would suggest just getting on of those eliminator batteries from crappy tire. Those suckers have such a long warranty. I don't think you can go wrong with that.

If you want the same size battery as stock, look for group 51R size batteries. There is also 51 but the polls are reversed.

actually you are wrong. the one I got from costco was the 51R and the R stands for reverse. our civics need the 51. I end up buying an energizer battery from walmart, 500cca and 600 or 650ca, pretty good specs and only $70 with 6 year warranty, 2 year replacement. much better than the one at canadian tire for $100.

Acura_mm: if the dealer battery has a 5 year warranty, what about the battery included with the car when purchased? does that have a 5 year warranty aswell?

Hi Fuzzy, it wasn't that bad. In fact, I blew an HID ballast late December and I had to pull the battery to get at the bulb (replaced with halogen till I can afford a new ballast or set). I had no trouble at all popping the battery back in using the OEM tiedown, I just had to put pressure on the battery while bolting it down, easily done by myself. The D34/78 one I got was bigger than the 51N and 51R, and was only a few bucks more. I saw that others had fit it so I picked it up, as the Optima site posited that there was significantly more cranking power and reserve in this unit than the 51's. Still happy with mine and in fact I once had a problem with my carputer where it didn't shut off automatically with the remote amp wire like it usually does and was on ALL NIGHT. I got out to my car to go to work the next morning and this sucker was still on full blast BUT the started up with a normal amount of cranking. If this thing can power a Pentium 4 computer for 6+ hours and start the car with no complaints, then you really can't ask for anything more.
