GTA: freak accident on 404
So I was on my way home last night. I had *just* gotten off the onramp from Steeles going south on 404, and *just* merged into traffic, when this big hunk'n chunk of black stuff mauled my car.
BOOM BADOOM BOOM
I freaked, and looked in rearview mirror... it looked like a bumper cover... my wife told me it was actually a strip of tire... a BIG one.
Called the cops right away, and apparently someone else had notified them already... eventually got off the highway to inspect the damage...
Left-front corner of the front bumper looks like it got kicked in, and driver-side door and rear 1/4 fender look like they got smacked around by a shopping cart...
OH I'M SO DAMN MAD!!!! It's a good thing that the car still drives and no one is hurt... much better a strip on tire on the front bumper than a piece of brick through the windshield... but I had JUST washed and wax it too!!!
And like everyone else, I'm probably not taking it to insurance... for fear of my premium increase later on... gosh I hate this system.

Sounds like a blown truck tire .. or could be smaller vechile, but not usually. Unfortunately, I've been in that situation - though I wasn't the driver and it wasn't my car. But my brother's car got eaten up by it - as we drove over it moreso than it flying, it ripped the exhaust system off too.
Sadly, its another day and joy of owning a car.

I hit one of those re-treads too. Compared to you I got lucky. I only had to pay 220 for repaint of front end.
But talk about messed up systems. You cant go through insurance cause your premiums will be jacked up and the trucker is long gone and he is not responsible either.
I feel for you man, I really do.

It was around 9:20-9:30pm... but oh well, I'm over it. It's just cosmetics... I'll patch up the ripped paint and still love my car. No one is hurt, the car runs fine, good enough for me...

I had a truck blow out one of its inner tires just ahead of me a couple of years back on the 401. Luckily the tire basically disintegrated and only smaller chunks hit the car, even luckier was the fact that I was driving a rental car.
Big Chunk of Ashphalt hit and caused a huge crack in my front windshield.
This was when the 404 construction had just begun.
At the time they just scraped the ashphalt, chunks of debris was everywhere.
Long weekend on the QEW heading south to the boarder, I see a HUGE metal pipe, looked like a table leg only bigger, bouncing across the highway lanes.
I had enough time to let it pass between my tires, but not enough to avoid it. It hit the bumper on the bottom pretty hard, and chipped a bit of paint, but no cracks (thank god for urethane) and passed under the car with a loud bang.
Other drivers weren't so lucky. One driver got a flat. I pulled over and offered to help.

I have the OEM version of weight reduction. DX

Somehow I think that a tractor trailor loosing it's "re-tread" is alot better than it's whole tire blowing out. Trucks are only alowed to have re-treads on the duel axels and not the front two tires. Either way no matter what hits your car on 400 series highway is like shrapnel on anyones car. Sorry to hear about the damages, but like Karumba said, "Sadly, its another day and joy of owning a car." BTW this has happened to me as well, so I feal your pain.
I had the same thing happen to be going north bound on the 404 right before the steels exit. It was about 4 years ago when I still had my Camry. I knocked the gasket out between the cat and the pipe to my muffler.. I guess I was lucky cause the mechanic just popped it back in and didn't charge me for it.. But it sure was scary..
They should really find away to keep those retreds on or get them swept off the hwy faster...
