transmission problem
this all happened within the last few days... it grinds from 1st to 2nd sometimes (manual trans).. 2nd to 3rd is ok... 3rd to 4th is tough to get into.. when in 2nd and 4th the shifter doesn't seem to be down all the way, it looks and feels like it'll pop into neutral.. and it did go from 4th to neutral a few times.
has anyone had problems like this before? will honda cover it?

if you are still under warranty, go ahead and take it in to get it fixed asap.. but things you could try urself is changing the tranny oil.. and there are a few other things but you'd better try a search..
I had to replace my 2001 lx tranny at 35k km
honda makes **** trannys, I feel it every time I shift
they didnt make me pay for the transmission but they didnt offer to pay for my tow truck or rental car either, so cost me $130 tow and not having a car for a week, kinda felt like being crippled :P

i called 2 dealerships in my area.. both service dept's claim there was no recall on 2001 civic transmissions..
they can't have it in until monday cuz they're booked solid.. did any of you get hassled for any mods? short shifter or anything that they might try to claim could have an affect?

alright, so i dropped off the car at castle honda today... at first they said i had to go home and put the stock shifter in (they thought i had a short shifter).. but really it's the stock shifter with like an inch cut off and a momo **** (i know, it's pretty ghetto). anyway, they said they have to take out the centre console and look around and stuff to check if it's covered under warranty.. i have a feeling they're gonna try to **** around with me.. so if any of you guys know where i can find any info on this "silent recall" or what exactly voids a warranty, please help me out.

ok, well they called today and said that i cut the shifter and welded my new shifter on (they're idiots it's a momo with set screws).. and they said i modified the cable underneath, which i didn't touch.. so they want to charge me $590 to get a new shifter and cable and bushings in there to get it back to "stock" (it is stock, except the 1 inch cut)... then they say they'll check the tranny.. **** that.. so which dealerships actually did the work under warranty? i'm gonna go pick up the car and take it to a tranny place to get it looked at, i don't think it's a major problem anyway.
Yes, it's an Acura EL

Wow, are they really that dumb, or do they really think you are? Freakin retarded. If you need to borrow a stock shifter assembly let me know, you may then be able to take the car to another dealership to honour warranty, assuming you have extended or something. If you want to try changing tranny fluid (not hard at all) there's an excellent DIY on the site. I found my tranny shifted smoother after I changed mine - you never know, that might be all you need.
People on this site have had post-service problems with places that used machines to flush the tranny then replaced all the fluid. So make sure if you do try changing the fluid (by yourself or at a shop), don't flush it out, just drain what will pour out when the drain bolt is pulled, then replace the fluid. Good luck.

is the transmission covered as 3 year 60,000km or 5 year 100,000km?
i took the car into a tranny place and they looked at it and said it's the 4th gear synchros.. and that they'd like to change them all (b/c the 2nd gear ones are going too).. quoted me 1200-1500. if the tranny is the 5 year 100,000km i'm still covered.. in that case, Telly i'd like to borrow your stock assembly and take the car to another dealer.. but how hard is it to swap those parts?

Shifter assembly takes 15-20 depending how hard it is to pull your centre console - there's an excellent diy here. If you wanna borrow the assembly just shoot me a pm.
*edit the warranty appears to be 5 years 100 000km....from the Honda site:

Those bastards...
I'm on my 2nd tranny also, there was a service bulletin on 01 5-sp trannys. Look on edmunds.com. they are such crooks. This has been an ongoing issue with my car as well. Fist I had the bushings replaced...a few months later they opened it up and replaced a few things. finally they totally rebuild my tranny. 30000kms later it makes a whining noise (becuse they didn't properly shim the differential bearing) and it grinds int 3rd gear just about every time. Between the transmission and the suspension issues, this car has been a real disappointment.

I agree with that 100% there are just too many freakin bugs. Honda is going down the drain and Scion is just dominating, well around here anyways.
