do u want to become a mechanic or just learn how to do more things? If a mechanic, start with school. If you just want to learn how to do more things, make some friends who already are mechanics, that's the easiest route.
Nobody in my family is a gear head, but my dad's a carpenter. He's got some tools I've used before.
If you want to save more on things you don't know how to do, get friends in the industry as I state again, cause they can do it for cheaper too.
As long as people can do basic car maintenence, I think you should be fine.
-oil changes
-rotor and cap
-spark plugs and wires
-pcv valve
-rotate tires
If you don't know how to do the following, you can also just check out the DIY on this website.
GL aequitas.

Can you help me buy a faster car? haha
Im actually in the exact same boat as you bro. When I bought this car, I didnt even know how to change the oil. But through the help of my 7gen brothers, ive come to learn a lot about cars. For me, the hardest part was not so much knowing how to turn wrenches, but understanding auto mecahnics in general. In other words, prior to entering the addictive world of auto tunning I didnt understand the basics of suspension or how each motor part works.
My advice to you (and to me) is get out there and get some books. Read, read read. And most of all, dont be afraid to ask questions on this site. Other sites seem to feel the need to flame noobies, but these guys are the way.
Eddy.

Hey if you're gonna pull me over, do it in front of my work, then pretend to cuff me n rough me up a bit...then everyone will think I'm dangerous, and the girls will love me in that "Fonz"-type way. All the guys will think I'm nuts.
Then we can go to Kennedy's across the street and watch college girls earn their tuition getting nekkid.
