Headlight Bulbs

Hello Everyone:

I need some advice for some new headlight bulbs. I know there is a lighting section for these questions, but I wanted to ask some fellow Canadians for advice first because I'm asking about the bulbs for my 02 Acura 1.7EL and this car is not available in the US. Here goes.

A friend gave my a pair off Showoff bulbs that he never used.

I'll describe the box. It says "Xenon bulbs" "4300K" "Krypton Series" on the top, "100/80W" "H.I.D." "Professional Halogen Lamp System" on the bottom/front. On the side it has a little section that says "Legal: For off road use only". On the actual bulb itself it says "H4 12V 100/80W Korea".

My questions are probably the same that others have had before.

1) Can I use these bulbs in my car?
2) Is the 100/80W ok to use without a burnout?
3) Do I need to rewire for the higher wattage?
4) What the hell does "Legal: For off road use only" mean?

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

Steve

phuviano has a spectacular aura aboutphuviano has a spectacular aura about
1) sure you can use them in your car
2) not too sure about the wattage thing, but I know these bulbs will probably burnout pretty soon.
3) yes you can use them with no rewiring
4) pretty much, should be used for show use. These lights are technical illegal to use on the road.

If you want good lights that are legal, get sylvania silverstars. Silverstars are not blue light or the purple lights you see most people with. They are white light coming from the head light.

Edit: Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm right with my answers.

Nope your right. Canadian Tire sells the silverstars, even walmart. I didnt buy the silverstars i bought the Slyvannia Cool Blue. Just as bright with a slight tinge of blue when you turn them on.

One thing just recheck your service manual to confirm that the bulbs you need are H4.

No need to confirm with the service manual

EL's use H4 bulbs.... I know, I have a 2001 1.7 EL

Check with Telly, he's running ShowOff series bulbs too....Check with him about the 100/80w designation.... See if it's the "REAL" output wattage, or the expected output wattage because "it looks white" kinda thing. Based on reading that, I would have personally assumed that you'd you running high wattage bulbs, which in general, may be a bad thing...

I'm running $10 F1 Spec-R pieces of crap, that have lasted me FOREVER! Output is horrible, and I regularly have condensation in my lamps (i.e. damp conditions), yet they're still running strong..... odd....

i got the very same set of bulbs on my civic like 1.5 years ago. got it for free and put on my car and one side burnt out within 3 weeks so i threw them out. they were very white but after i parked my car, i put my hand on the headlight and it was burning hot

i also tried the F1SpecR, it lasts long and it's cheap but it's not bright at all...just whitish colour

the silverstar i tried are way brighter than stock, specR, and Showoff and it is not as hot on the headlight housing (when i put my hands to feel the temp)

Showoffs do feel a little cooler. H4 is the right bulb size. Install is easy - just follow the manual. These aren't REALLY 100/80, so they won't burn out. Rewiring is not necessary. These bulbs are technically illegal so the cops do have a case if they want to bust you down. I'm running over a year with the same bulbs, no problems with cops or burning out. They do tend to yellow a little bit after a year though, but hell, they're pretty cheap anyway, you can get another set for like 20 bucks. I'd say I see a little better down the road than with standard bulbs, but I haven't even driven a car with stock headlights for the longest time so I could be talking out my a$$.

Thanks

Thanks Telly, I was worried about the heat from the output, especially because it says 100/80 on the box. I guess if you've been running them for a year, it should be ok. If I'm ever pulled over, I'll give them some lame as excuse and hopefully not get busted.
