you can just clean it.
wash it, then dry it up.. make sure it's dry.
then put it back on.

oil it too... Use Dextron or if you dont have any of that use normal 5W-20 oil...

I don't know what Dextron is but I didn't know you could use 5w-20 to oil the filter...

I'd just go out and buy a K&N filter cleaner. It comes with all the stuff you need to clean a filter including the oils and what not.

Hey loungey, just pick up a K&N recharger kit from Craptastic Tire and follow the cleaning instructions. I do mine twice a year. WAY more than required I'm sure but I'm paranoid.

The oil on/in the filter holds dust and dirt particles in suspension, keeping them from being embedded in, or even worse, entering the filter. Driving slowly depletes the oil on the filter, and of course clenaing washes it right out, so you have to put more on. Paper filters don't use oil, just the fabric ones.
There's a bunch more info on the K&N website:

Filters are most definitely NOT the same size. K&N is the leader in the field, you should look at their stuff.
