What is it like to live/work around the D.C. area?

I have never been up there to visit, but I was wondering what it's like to live and work up there? What kind of things are there to do up there and what kind of people live up there, besides government types?

Thanks

traffic is a disaster, but there's lots to do. If you get bored, you're doing something wrong. I live in DC now, but I'm moving out of the district for a variety of reasons.
As far as "government types" ummm I don't see a whole lot of suits walking around with earpieces. There's the Secret Service cop cars, but they just drive around, DC cops don't seem to **** me off too much, but then again I haven't given them much reason to, but mostly traffic blows. And I'm getting sick of clueless tourists (one of the problems of living where I live).
Theres 7 or 8 colleges in town, and a lot of people straight out of school, to quote Top Gun...its definitely a target rich environment.
You shouldn't have to drive a lot, the metro goes most places you need to be, I just use the car on weekends for groceries, errands and road trips. Most of the time it sits there all week.
Its expensive for sure, not as bad as, say, Manhattan, but plan on rent in most decient areas inside the beltway being 4 digits, don't expect cheap car insurance and gas prices here are some of the highest in the country.

nifer, you suck! j/k

i just moved out of the area 6months ago. IT ****ING SUCKS ***.

I lived right outside of DC in MD for 15 years. I could write a really long book about why it sucks so bad.

People are incredibly rude. Everyone is in a hurry for no reason. Traffic is beyond bad. It's ugly and dirty. And entirely too expensive to live, unless you're making gov't. money. Even then, you would be a moron to pay $900k for a house.

I was actually in the area over Memorial Day weekend and I'm just glad to be back home on the Gulf Coast. There's no way in hell I would ever live there again. My peace of mind is worth way more than to put up with the stressful life I was living up there.

haha nooo, well maybe u'll be up to visit when i'm there!

I don't think I could ever live there, but i'll be interning with the government and it's a great opportunity...plus my housing will be payed for i'll be living in an apartment with another intern right outside of the city in VA. Not positive i'll be in DC quite yet, but hopefully it'll work out!

lol. I haven't checked back with this thread in a while, looks like I missed a lot. Thanks for all the info from all the locals. I was thinking about applying to a semi-government type job up there and was just wondering what it is like up there. The job was offering low 50's and that looked really attractive, but now I know why. I'm in Tampa now which is also a large metro area, but a little more spread out I guess. The traffic here sucks also, but that is only on two interstates. I'm guessing you all have 4 or more interstates linked up together. lol.

Thanks for the heads up you all. I think I might explore my options here in sunny Florida before venturing on up north.

Well IMO, low 50s isn't going to go very far around here. If you lived way out, or lived with a lot of roomates, I guess you could do it, but I'd venture to say that even with roomates your average rent inside the beltway would be over $700 a month + utilities and car insurance (which is a lot). I thought the same thing when I got an offer from the feds and heard how much it paid.... I moved out here and it didn't take long for the expensiveness to set in.

Well I hate to say bad things about our wonderful capitol but man those VA cops hate me like crazy. Had it not been for a nicer FASTER accord I would've got a pretty nasty ticket. With D.C. , since I live 30 mins from it but have to commute 10 days straight, you either leave SUPER early or you try to come in an hour or 2 late to miss that stuff. Im from Daytona Fl and MD drivers are BAD/CRAZY. Maybe its me....Lifes best lived at 75+

i love this area, many things to do. but everyone is right about traffic, its horrible even late in the night. without traffic it would take me 15 minutes to get to work, with traffic it takes almost an hr. i miss my civic's gas mileage..even it traffic it was awesome.
