Are you supposed to have to strain to pull them open, or is there a way to loosen the black stuff up?

Use a heat gun or a blow dryer.

The reason being that I have heard it before. That is why I know what to do with the blow drier and heat gun. Also why would I let you touch my car Joe, when your right headlight leaks. I am not crazy sorry.

Heat it and take an exacto knife and gently slit it. Then strain and pull apart. it is definitely easier with two people. If you can't get it. I live in baltimore if you want some help. PM if you need it. PEace

Dude, I think I read here somewhere people are using ovens.

I think this is how it goes (search for confirmation) : Pre-heat your oven to 250 degrees for 5 mins then put your headlights in it for another 5 mins. After that all that gooey stuff will be so soft you won't have to use a heat gun or hair drier.

I used a hair drier on mine and I tell you, it also heated my fingers!

BTW, don't believe civicdude. My lights don't leak nor fog as long as I stay away from the automatic car wash!!!
