Yeah i looked at the Mazda 3 as well, almost $18,000 for a nicely loaded one is abit much. The days of a $10,000 compact is dwindling quickly. Too much technology and higher repair costs dont help either.

My mom's 97 EX Auto only manages about 27-28 with about 75% highway driving.

My 01 LX Auto gets about 32 average with about 75% CITY.

I drove both cars when I recorded the fuel economy, and I tried to drive them both the same.

Of course, the 97 is in Austin TX where people drive faster on the highways, the gas is probably formulated a little different, etc, the 97 has more miles, etc...

hmmm, interesting. Every Civic (pre 03) i know only gets like 30-32 mpg highway (real world driving), even my 97 hatch only got 35mpg and that was strictly highway milage (16 miles each way). the best milage i ever got was drafting a tractor trailer at 80 mph in my 91 hatch and got 55 mpg on a 160 mile trip. Did hondas recently get higher mpg rating? This is one of the reasons i was looking at the Corolla was the idea of 30 mpg on highway with the Civics. Ooops , my mistake i guess about the mpg. Ignorance is bliss

well i had a corolla before this civic, adn this civic is my first new car and i like my civic a lot. my old corolla lasted a good 10 yrs and 130k miles and then it died. let me say corollas are real reliable. i never fixed much on it, besides an exhaust which got a hole from a rock and besides that, nothing. very nice car.
