Best used car for under 4k?
Hey guys, what do you think is the best car for under 4k?
My gf has been getting rides from me for about a year now and it's worked out, but now she's gonna be going to the Cornish Art College and she needs a cheap/good looking car (I'm not sure if those two words go together...).
So far she's been looking at a 95 Dodge Neon. Any opinions/suggestions would be great.

Not a neon... I drove my friend's neon (it's a '99) and it was a POS.... and that's a 99! What's an earlier model gunna be like? Granted, he doesn't take care of it all that well and it needed an alighnment hella bad, but still... you're better off with an older gen hatch or something like that.
Dont get a Neon, I think the 95-99 years were known for pre-mature engine failures. Get a Honda, my friends Civic ran until 220K thousand miles it was a 95 EX. He raped that thing every day since the day he owned it. (treated the car poorly) And it was still running when he sold it! Why do you think I am driving a Civic?

Yeah, try to get a 1990 240SX, unless it snows a lot where you are. You might by able to get a 1994-1995.... maybe..... maybe a early 90's Accord, also possible..

I had a NEON...I am almost embarassed to say. I bought it new in 95...It was in the shop every two weeks. What a POS. I traded it in 1 year later and got a 94 civic. For $4,000 I would look for a 5th gen civic coupe or hatch. If you get a coupe, get an EX...You should be able to find one with under 90k in good shape for that price.
yeah, 1990 240sx sleeper, rb26dett r34 skyline engine swapped. then run, outrageous boost one it, get all forged internals, mod up the fuel sys. and there ya go, 1000 hp sleeper just like that. and when ya sell it, (dumb thing to do) it may go for like under 4 gs if you really need money (also look at kbb.com) and the person who bought it from you would be in for a surprise. ok this is not as simple as it sounds so i'll stop there.
I sure wish my car was newer

I don't think his friend is gonna want a Skyline motor if she's in Art College. Be reasonable. I say used accord or maybe if she wants a sporty car, a ~96 Celica. Not sure if that's in the price range though.

Yup, I would go with a used Civic. A friend back in college had this old 85 civic that looked like a piece of junk, and he never spent a dime on it. The car lived for two years of grad college with CERO problems.
I would also consider a Corolla, Sentra and... (I know I will get flamed for this) an Escort (they are actually quite good cars and very reliable, unlike the Focus - I can attest this after driving one for over 5 years and mistreating it)

if you are really into researchin like i am get a consumer report buyers

well worth it
Be realistic. I highly doubt she wants to do engine swaps and all that.
Just get like an early 90's Accord or maybe a middle 90's civic. They last forever. Cant go wrong.
You could ever go the wrote of an older sentra (my mom had an '89 she bought new for $4500 and the thing was a great car). Toyota's are always good cars too, just really boring.
Hope that helps,
