Question 1990 Corolla

I read a classified in my local newspaper for a 1990 Corolla with 180k miles and a broken starter selling for $75. It was titled "Please get this thing the Hell out of my driveway" Anyways, I'm considering buying it. I'd like a car to use for Rallying and Autocrossing/SoloII. But, I don't really know much about the corolla and I don't know what model this one is. I'm wondering what kind of engines those Corolla's have and what I can do to them. I've done a search and found some basic information, but I'm wondering if anyone can know if really make this thing a winner. Basically, if I can get ~140hp at the wheels out of this car, I'll be able to compete pretty well. What do you guys think? Buy or pass?

You can't beat $75, especially if the only thing wrong with it is a broken starter - but that is probably not the case. You probably want a manual tranny, doors prolly don't matter too much... if its the 4wd model that might be good for the rally. I'd go check it out.
Here's a Linky, the regular model has 1.6L 102hp, but if its a GT-S it has 130hp.

My dad owns a 89 Corolla...that think is a piece of CRAP! There is no power...man I could probably beat that thing running. lol (maybe not, but you get the picture) The one we have has 16 valves, four cylinders, 4 dr, heavy, and other stuff...If you are interested I can bust out my dad's car manual?

Good luck haha

hmm either way $75 is nothing, but i bet some other things are wrong with the engine, andnot just the broken starter, you should go for it and see what kind of stuff u need to do to it to get it running

Buy it for $75 and then sell it at a profit hahaha. Or you could probably scrap it and sell the parts for more than $75 and make some dough.

Well, if I do buy it, it's gonna be my project car. I've never really been under the hood (like really under the hood) so I just want to mess around with this car. But, yeah, I checked the retail for a fair condition corolla. The lowest class with the 180k sells for just over a grande. Either way, I would make money if I resold it. I'd like it for Solo II tho. But, I think even if I strip this baby, it's still gonna weigh a ton, so I dunno about that. Maybe I'll call the lady up... But my parents aren't too happy about having a peice of junk laying around... Heh, we live in Tennessee, it'll be a lawn ornament!

Junk cars always make the best lawn ornaments ;-) Much better than those shiny ballz or flamingos IMO.

EDITO: What SOLO II class would compete in with that Corolla?

What class would I be in... Well, if I fix it up, I suppose I'd be in the H modified class. If I run it stockish, then I'd have to be H stock. Either way, bottom of the pool...
