difference in D3 and D4 (auto) besides D3 gear restriction?
Just wondering, what's the difference between D4 and D3 besides the fact that D3 is restricted to the first 3 gears? In D3, does the tranny shift differently in any way? I don't really see any difference...
d3 is good for punching it i use it in my hatch when i race... drop it intoo d3 at the light, and it revs higher threw the gears.. and then i drop it into my final d4 when 3rd gear comes around
D3 is using the first 3 gears and D4 is all fours gears... and yes they are differetn because if you leave it in D3 and spped up it can only hit a certain speed and your engine will rev higher... use D3 if switching from D4 @ high speeds you'll feel something. D# has a purpose..Wait why am i even replying to this? READ THE MANUAL..I KNOW IT"S IN THERE

i know that D3 is restricted to 1, 2, 3... and D4 is 1, 2, 3, 4... but are you guys sure having the shifter in D3 makes the tranny shift at a higher RPM? i see no difference since i can redline in both modes...
i have never raced my auto and never will... this post isn't even about racing in the first place... i'm just curious as to what the differences between D3 and D4 are besides the gear restrictions...

i really dont think theres any diffrence between D3 and D4. the only time i use it is when i'm passing or want to go faster on the highway when i'm already in 4th gear. doing this makes the car downshift to 3rd gear. the only reason why the car feels more peppy is when the car is going at a speed where the car would normally shift to 4th gear, and you're not letting it and restricting it to 3rd. just keep it in D4.

Since when did D3 give you a different torque setting? Why will it even matter when you cant even redline in 3rd and wouldn't you rather if tryin to rev higher, go to 2nd so you have a control over a gear? Not only that arn't automatics controlled by the ECU durring shifts because it's through the fuel/air map sensor, (therefore shifting ealier when you aren't gassing it rather than having a set shift period)?
Im gonna save you the touble by calling you an idiot.
Do not bother posting.
Shifting from D4 to D3 at over 69mph you will feel a better response due to the fact that 2nd gear redlines around that point and 3rd starts, therefore downshifting from 4th to 3rd...Don't go to 2nd cuz like I said, 2nd is passed and unless you want to buy a new tranny, I suggest not. But with the downshift is of course a higher RPM and therefor allowing the engine to work at its best, well fastest; with VTEC and all...you kno wha I mean.

as you said, gear restriction... there shouldn't be any other difference really.
although some gears do performe better than other gears in terms of hp and torque... hmm. I wish I remember what the qualification was, but there's a reason why when you get a dyno, they select a gear to do the dyno on...
for those that "race" with D3 in the gear.. whats the point? I really haven't come across any auto that revs higher if its in a different selection.
and I dont see any reasons for people to downshift into D3 when they're on D4... unless your auto tranny is very slow in responding, when you press down the pedal hard, the tranny should automatically (thats why its an automatic) downshift into 3rd gear or the best gear to get the best power...
there's a reason for diff. gearings.. there's a lot of situations where you might need to keep the gear at 3rd.. (ie: you're driving with a heavy load and need the extra hp and torque) or you're going down hill, up hill... whatever.

thanks for the clarifications all... other people on this board are posting that "you get better results in D3", "you rev higher in D3" BS, which is hard to believe.... just wanted to confirm what i thought...
160km/h in D3!?!?! wow! i don't recall ever going that fast, well in my civic at least
