cambo has a spectacular aura aboutcambo has a spectacular aura about
a SOHC cannot be turned into a DOHC. the dynamics of the engine and components are too different. only way is to totally swap the engine for another. Adding VTEC to a non-VTEC engine is a different story. some can, some cant

Yeah, you'd have to swap in a head from the same gen o' civic. Either it's not possible to put a head from a k20 on a d17, or people have done it and aren't telling, but it's a pretty safe bet that it's not possible. If you're looking to do the conversion from LX or DX to EX(head/ecu/timing swap), then yeah it is possible. Just pop the head, timing belt and ECU off a D17A-whatever-it-is for the EX thingy off, pop it on your car. Yay.

As far as cost, it's not exactly cheap. Figure about $3-500 for the ECU and about that for the head, and who knows for the belt. Your performance boost will be exactly 12 horsepower, which is the difference between the EX and LX or DX or whatever. It will, however, yield more of a performance increase than a p/p and a re-bore, and you'll be able to get a wee bit more out of those mods, but IMO if you're going to do something like that to your Civ you can also do a k20a2 swap, which in the long run is more cost-effective. Double your power and leaves your car to respond better to any upgrades. Expect to spend upwards of $7k for a k20 engine swap.

Somethin' to think about.

You cannot swap between different engines. For instance, a K series head cannot go onto a D block.
