why would they make it 2.5 liter?
why would they make it 2.5 liter?
why is subaru changing their jdm sti engine from 2.0 liters to the us version 2.5? why aren't they just keeping the same displacement? is it just to completely blow the evo 8 out of the water when it arrives here?
they should have stayed rally spec imo

Reason 1... Because then everyone has to go and find the JDM engines to swap in

Reason 2... They probably had some emission trouble. The Regular WRX is clogged up with catalytic converters as it is.
Reason 3... The JDM Legacy (I don't remember what it's called over there), has a turbo 2.5.
It does suck... and will raise the same debate as the ITR vs. RSX-S debate and leave people saying "Where's the real one?"

the sti engine in japan, used in their rally cars, has a displacement of 2.0 L
they have increased the displacement for the us version to 2.5 L
I'm asking if somebody knows if they did this for a reason other than what i suspect to just be superior to the evo 8 in the us market....

hey f**k you, i'm asking why they changed it, not saying it sucks. i was just curious if it was for some other reason than to be more powerful than the evo 8 in the us market. did i say it sucks that they're increasing the displacement? i just wanted to know why
I hear ya on the rally spec thing, but I think Subaru made the right move.......who in America actually races in WRC?
The STi is one sweet ****in car, and instead of having to say "why didn't we get the REAL one", the ppl in Japan will be saying that for once. more displacement = more torque, and Torque ownz j00!!!!!!1

It's a larger 4-banger.
Oh yeah. Stop f*****g complaining about the increased displacement. It's just as reliable as the 2.0L, if not better (less boost required to make equal power). Larger displacement also means when you are under 3,000RPM and your turbo hasn't spooled up yet, you won't be caught with your pants down. Think about it. Scooby's 2.0L engine, without turbo boost (under 3K RPM) is gonna be no match for an econo Corolla (sad but true). That extra 500cc will get you up and going a lot better before turbo kicks in. I know it's just a momentarly second turbo lag, but in racing situation, that is a large penalty. Besides, North American consumers DEMAND torque.
But truth be known, Subaru just wants to rape Mitsubishi. They don't want to start the "STi vs Evo" war here. They just wanna f*****g clean Mitsu's clock for good.
I PRAISE Subaru for increasing the displacement. SUBARU had the ***** to bring out the WRX to North America--Mitsu was too damn chicken. They had to wait till Subaru took the chance first. Of course, if everybody was as chicken **** like Mitsu is, then we would never have these cars here.
Now Subaru raised the bar with the 2.5L--an engine that is actually BETTER than the import counterpart (hey, how often does THAT happen??).
**** MITSUBISHI. People should buy Subaru!! (not to mention their new Subaru Forrester and 300HP Subaru Legacy)

The 2.5 is mainly for more low end, off boost torque. Its still going to have the AVCS that the 2 liter STi has. One other thing, the US STi has taller 5th and 6th gears than the JDM car, no doubt for better highway usage...
my reply in the other thread ------->
they probably took the engine off Legacy and shoved it into the new WRX STi.
and since they have 2.0L WRX STi in other parts of the world, this move to 2.5L in america wont affect their WRC program.
For a change america is getting the most powerful WRX STi [except one-offs like 202 STi], who cares about the displacement.
if STi is priced anywhere near EVO, Mitsubishi will have a lot to worry about.

I have the new Car&Driver and it said the price is just north of $30k. Although a lot of people are already speculating large dealer mark-ups upwards near $40k. But I guess we'll just have to see. I'll be the first in line if the price is near $30k, but much more than that I just don't know if it would be worth it.
Agreed. Its hard for me to even swallow the low 30k price... My WRX wagon was 22k and while it was a great value, its hard to really think how much better that 10k will be...
tires, brakes, wheels, suspension, seats, bigger engine, 6spd... But its not going to have any better quality of materials inside... I really enjoyed the car, but for that kind of price I think I'd rather have something nicer, even if you can't modify it as easily... Also, a regular WRX can be modified to be competitive with a stock STi for less than the 10k. Of course, you might not have a warranty at that point...
