Wings are helpful on FWD cars?! no way!
source: Import Tuner Issue #048 March 2003 i know i know.....
i'm jus gonna copy it word for word at the parts that matter most...
blah blah blah....
the automotive engineers who designed your car have a specific operating range they target in order to balance looks, safety, price, and feasibility in an operating range that maxes out at about 80 mph. Owners of modified cars tend to go beyond that operating range (duh!). That's where mods become neccesary to gain the performance and safety needed at those higher speeds.
Balance is the key to any racing vehicle. While a vehicle might be ideally balanced at the scales, aerodynamic forces at differring speeds change that equation.
figures are next...but i'm not gonna scan them... i'll summaries it. speed causes air to hit hood and put downforce on front wheels....air bounces off and not as much air hits the rear, which cause lift on the rear wheels at higher speeds.
This lift causes the car to become unbalanced; the faster you go, the more the forces are pronounced. This effect is known as "bias." From there, checking out the wing placement and subsequent aerodynamic benefit is a no-brainer.
:figure 3: add in spoiler....air bounces off spoiler creating some downforce on the reat wheels, thus restoring more balance to the car.
blah blah blah..
check it out....maybe they jus discovered a reason for tasteful wings on our cars that not only looks good, but may be helpful. Finally import tuner might have something right for once.
now where the hell is the Max Boost comic?!

A "functional" spoiler is beneficial to any vehicle. Ghetto double decker monster wings on a FWD car is jsut overkill and considered "ricey". Basically the effects of a spoiler dont really even become a factor until high velocities are acheived, something like over 90 mph or so, downforce is proportional to the amount of air resistance on your vehicle. Just because its a fwd car means nothing. wheels have to stick to the ground when your going fast or else you wont be able to maintain traction on the road. It is just more beneficial to rwd cars since their "driving" axle is the one that has the extra downforce being applied to it. Most newer vehicles are coming with front and rear under diffusers to replace the use of spoilers by pulling the car down at high speeds, rahter than push it down like a conventional trunklid spoiler.

Yea it makes sense to me like i read on another post about having a unsafe feeling when driving over 80 and i had that same feeling but i just thought it was in my head

The porsche spoiler goes up according to wing force just like the lamborghini murcielago the gull wings (i think thats what their called) extend to adjust to downforce.

To me, the spoiler finishes the back of my car. Some cars look good with out it (bullet) but I think it just adds the extra touch. Functionality is always a plus though.
A wing serves no purpose for a daily driver unless driven at high speeds. Bolting a huge wing on a civic will probably not even give you stability at high speeds. It depends on the type, size, placement of the wing. Yes the porsche wing does 'flip up' at higher speeds in the boxter but that was only an after thought b/c of a poor drag coef. due to the cars shape. An its purpose is more for increased gas mileage. The 911 also have a rotating wing whose movement is dictated by speed yet german scientits spent enless hours using complex formulas and wind tunnels to get the finished product. It adds stability due to the cars hunched back shape(which was for intuitive when the cars were air cooled but thats a different topic all together) buying a huge aluminum wing on ebay and slapping it on a any number of cars does not make for more stable car. It makes for an extra look or two(wont say whether negative or positive) in the mall parking lot Adding a 3 foot wing to a ecomomy car is your own choice but justifying the physics behind might go a bit too far.

I tend to be going in a straight line at those speeds and am on the interstate no less. So, whether it does or doesnt' do anything, I could care aless. I keep my speed low enough when driving on a curvy road so that a wreck is worst case, not death.

i still dont think i would buy one besides the factory spoiler because of it is associated with the so called "ricer"
i love porsches( my dream car) along with skylines
this member took a nice pic of their ride witha factory spoiler and i think it would look nice on mine too
it's jus a good ngle shot
