How long until your tranny is hurt?
My buddy has a 3.28i Bimmer that he takes very good care of. He was driving along the other day with someone in the car and the kid's leg accidentally knocked the shifter into neutral. My friend stepped on the gas and it just started revving, so the kid realized what he had done, and pulled it into drive. Basically, a neutral drop. Now my buddy is worried out of his mind about his tranny. I've driven the car and it doesn't feel like anything is wrong, and I told him there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Am I right? If the car was treated well before he got it, one neutral drop isn't going to seriously hurt anything, will it?

It's probably fine. Thats part of the reason why neutral is there, so you can take it out of gear. What hurts the most is when you hold the revs high and then drop in in drive repeatively, as it burns up the bands and clutches. Tell him to check the fluid for a burnt or discolored(dark redish black) appearance or if it looks the same as it did before. Doing this one time shouldnt cause any problems.

If he was smart and waited untill the rpms went down and then put it back into drive its not a problem at all, no diffrent then a guy with a manual putting it in neutral at a stop light and then putting it first and driving off (low rpms of course) but if he didnt wait then hes just dumb and deserves to have his tranny screwed over. And if hes driving a 328 im sure his parents can afford a new tranny.

1) It was the passenger that put it back in drive, not the driver.
2) He paid for the car with money he got from a trust fund because his dad died during open heart surgery when he was six months old. His mom and stepdad didn't put in a penny.
