Waming the Car

How long should I warm the car? Is it better to warm until engine at optimal temperature or is a couple minutes good to drive? I notice that the car gets warm quicker when you drive it ... so what is best? combination of warming and driving or let it warm completely in the driveway?

if you read in your manual it tells you that you don't need to let your car warm up, i guess newer cars dont require it

my car acts funny on cold starts..i dunno, maybe its just me, but i feel like it performs better under normal operating temperatures..i wait a couple of minutes just to get the oil moving. the whole car seems to loosen up once its all warmed up.

If I go by what my owners manual says, it states that you should be able to drive after about a minute. 4 cylinders(or any inline type engine) usually warm up quicker over v6 or v8 engines since there is less metal to warm up. If your going to warm it up to operating temp, just make sure that you rev up lightly here and there to keep oil flow and pressure up. What I do for my first start up is let it run for a few minutes then drive slowly until its at operating temp. Then depending on where the temp is the next time I start, I determine if I need to let it warm up some or not.

my gas gauge always goes lower than normal when it's cold. Then it rises to normal when the temperture becomes normal

Its always best to wait till the car is at full operating temp. Take a look at the M5's. When the engine is cold the redline is 4,000rpm, and as the engine temp increases so does the redline. I follow the same plan when driving my car. I never shift above 4,000rpm until the engine is at normal operating temp.

When your engine is cold, the idle is higher. This makes it feel like it has more torque and better throttle response. Its normal. As the engine gets warmer, the CTS(coolant temp sensor) tells the ECM that it can now decrease the idle via the TPS(throttle position sensor). Basically its a computerized choke.

Mine acts the same, but I think its from the fuel sloshing around as I drive. The sloshing I think makes the fuel gauge read higher.

I give it about 30 secs or so just to get the juices flowing. Until the temp gets up to normal operating temp, I keep it under 3 grand.
