Great, more cheap turbos....
Reading the new installment of Motor Trend, I came across yet another interesting development. It seems the little engine big power thing is taking over... Ford now plans to stuff a Mazda 2.3L Turbo engine into the SVT Focus for 04, and kick it up to 225 HP. In addition to that, The Neon SRT-4 comes out next year with 215 HP/245 ft-lbs of torque from a 2.4 L running 14 psi. Sport Compact Car has already verified that the Neon (albeit a final pre-production test car) can run with a WRX (well, until you have to turn hard) and is less than $20K. We already know the Mazdaspeed Protege is due out soon... So what's next? Who's gonna pull the next one out? Will VW boost the GTI again? Can Nissan pull off a QR25DET and make a Turbo Sentra? Perhaps a Matrix Turbo? Or maybe Honda will finally pull some of that "race technology" (The CART engines were turbo, they know how to do it) out of the wood works and build a Turbo Civic/RSX. Any guesses? It appears a revolution is beginning.....
As much as I would love to see a turbo honda, I don't think we ever will. To my knowledge there has never been a production Honda witht a turbo (at least i've never seen one). Honda uses VTEC to provide a power boost. Its very relaible as opposed to a turbo car and is cheaper. Of course a turbo provides more power though.
I love to see this power war going on. It seems to be the new muscle car shootout. I think honda is trying to counter with the Civic SiR if it gets here. The other players are already ahead of that on power, but Honda never tries to win with brute force. Look at the NSX, its still only got 280 or 290 whatever horsepower. It is a very refined and reliable car and I think that wins alot of people over. Same with the S2000. Not alot of brute force, but well made and high tech.
Maybe Honda does have something up their sleeve. I can't wait to see

the mazdaspeed protege is very unimpressive for its $20k price tag. i'd take a SVT focus over that thing any day. toyota's rumored to be coming out with the next celica in 04, and it'd be sweet if they revived the GT-FOUR (awd, turbo)

No, No turbo matrix, a supercharger developed with Pontiac is supposedly on its way and will likely become a TRD add-on with the twin vibe.
Nissan will not likely pressurize anything - they have been going all NA and have been doing quite well at it.
No, Honda is saddened by *extremely* slow Si sales and will move to place the 200 hp K engine in the SI.
Look for GM to do some aftermarket add-ons for the eco-tech engine as well.

Supercharged Matrix... Ok, did not know that, but if it comes from TRD, It'll prolly be pretty damn good.
As for Nissan.... a VQ35DETT is in the works for the new Skyline, so theres nothing to say a Turbo QR25 isn't gonna happen.
And yeah.... Honda and turbo would be a dream that is unlikely.
I just wanted to see what was on people's minds considering the Americans seem to be beating up on the Japanese at their own game....
