True doesnt matter dohc or sohc its all in the tuning.....a 96 sedan here ran with the d16 sohc engine and placed a crazy 12.3 in the 1/4 mile...the new Corollas are nice but they aren't really built for what they seem...reason why people buy civics are the fact that the aftermarket aimed at the civic as a easy to upgrade car that would not be too pricey!! Yea the toyotas engine are great platforms also and i got nothing against it..i also drive a 03' matrix XRs and dame that thing SMASHES!!! compared to my civic but i chosed to bulid my civic up instead...only my thoughts..
WELL..SOHC motors arent really inferior....Infact, Dodge ditched the 2.0L DOHC in favor of the SOHC in 2001+.....any guess why?

yea I have noticed the torque/power ratio is higher on SOHC's.........Just look at the domestic V8's
torque is good.......

torque is good.......

but why do they need to? DOHC is not always superior to SOHC, its just a different technology... Quote

Honda doesn't need to change motors because its probably cheaper to produce d17's on the old engine line.... the new engine IS an upgrade to the old engine, just not in the realm of "adding another camshaft"

most domestic v8's like chevy 350's and such don't have overhead cam(s) Quote

no, actually it was the flatter/fatter TQ curve...
For the majority of the population, it was better to have a car that made consistant power at a lower RPM range...IMO...
Although I LOVE my 2.0L DOHC...150hp 133lb/ft TQ

you can get a flatter curve in an engine with DOHC too, its all in the tuning... (timing, etc...)
it was cheaper for dodge to retool with a sohc engine jus like honda

That was a big factor I'm sure...the 2001+ R/T and ACR Magnum 2.0L SOHC's make the same 150hp, but more torque I believe....

You can go up very very steep uphills and sitll accelerate, without any downshifting. Definitley the quickest car in its class.
Honda is definitely holding out on Civics.. maybe SOHC will do fine for engines made for fuel economy. They employe SOHC engines for Acura TL and CL as well... DOHC seems to be reserved for more "performance" oriented cars, like Civic SiR, RSX, NSX & S2000.
Despite the lack of horsepower, and SOHC engines, Civics are still selling like crazy. Until there is a major sales drop, or a HUGE performance difference, I don't think we'll be seeing them go DOHC with 1.7L. What I would like to see is a more fuel efficient 2.0L engines, pulled from the SiR and used on all regular Civics. Even a detuned, lowered compression 140-150HP would be nice. Torque always helps everyday driving for sure.
before i sold my g-tech pro it rated me at 115 hp to the wheels. i got a few mods. Quote

Oh..and BTW...
A GTEC IS NOT, I repeat NOT an accurate measure of WHEEL horsepower......

i dunno why a lot of people are saying the corrola S is more powerful and faster, i raced the old and new corrola s and beat them both. Took them right off the line and only saw them in my rear view mirror. my car isn't very fast but, if i can beat a corrola i don't think there that fast.

AHHAHAHA you're joking me right? Stock MP3/MP5's can dust any stock Civic on a track/autoX. Quote

It's a drivers race if both are stick, but car for car, corolla has more potential and IS a faster car. Quote

Truthfully, I don't even bother racing Corolla's, it's not worth my gas (well only if they thing they are something else but, then I just downshift smile and
isgust . All the corollas's, that I've seen is either stock or riced up to the extreme. But, then of course, I don't have a 7th gen. I usually like racing modded Civics, other integras both 2nd get and 3rd gen. I even raced an older model Maxima, I only beat that by a 1/4 of a car length but, he started flooring it a whole car length ahead of me.
Pretty much all I have to say is, Corolla's are slow, faster then civics but, Civics are slow too.

If you have the current issue of SCC, look towards the front and it will talk about hp vs torque. Usually cars with more torque will have a wider gear ratio. Thats why civics can beat cars with more torque, civics have shorter gears than say a neon or a corolla with more torque. Torque is good but when racing its only half of it, you need to account for the gear ratios.
Oh and DOHC is not always better than SOHC. There is a 10 sec D16, of course its not street legal but hey its a 10 sec car.

ScreaminDOHC, my car is not heavily modded. I/H/E on a SOHC 1.7L does JACK SHAT! You know how much more power it makes my car put out? 110wheel hp to 119. BFD. 2-3 cars to 60 is pretty bad loss to a 119fwhp honda with extra weight and my fat a$$ driving. I meant to say any corlla or protege' in my post not stock. There has never been a Protege' or Corolla to come within 2-3 cars of me. If you want to talk smack, meet up and race me.
BTW heavily modded referring to bolt ons is funny as hell, my last car was a 96 Z28 with a Vortech 12# blower (V1-T Trim) with complete fuel system and Ford 9" rear end with 4.10s, shift kit, 3500 stall converter, JE pistons, and THEN bolt ons.

WeakVtec, on Protege5 vs your Civic, it's a drivers match on a straight line.
But on a track or Autocross, you'll be eating my dust. P5 suspension / handling is WAY
bettern than civic in Stock trim, but hey, if you have springs, let the better driver win.

Don't have springs installed yet but I do have them, as well as DC strut bar and upper adn lower tie bars F&R. You said that a stock protege' and MY civic in a straight line is a drivers race? I haven't seen any stock Protege' break a 16.3. I know Stock EX vs. Stock p5/MP3 is close. But not i/h/e/clutch civic vs. stock P5.
And at the moment I do get owned by the better Protege's in the twisties

Proteges kick ***
Gotta love their suspension. I remember when Car & Driver tested ProtegeMP3 vs Impreza vs Jetta VR6 vs Couger... the ProtegeMP3 completed the race track laps the quickest, with the SLOWEST car! Tell me that's not impressive..
But engine wise, I perfer the old 1.8L to the new 2.0L, which is basically a base 626 engine. At least the 1.8L was the base of a proven engine--Miata. There seems to be no improvement in acceleration either..

it doesnt really matter the motor you have wether it ba a b18 or a k20 or if its twin cam or single... if you dnt knw how to drive it rite thers no point in havvin such a big engine because if you dnt knw wen to shift your still gonna lose the run
