I autocross in my civic, which is an automatic. Alot of people like to complain about automatics. But there are only a couple downfalls, which can or can't be overcome.

A.) Differential - sucks, and can't be replaced (big let down)
B.) Gear Ratios - suck, but can taken advantage of with more Horse Power.
C.) Shifting - I keep it in D3 and it stays in 1st / 2nd Gear, no problems here.
D.) Transmission - really unless your over 300hp your transmission will be fine. However, levelten.com can bulletproof your trannie when you do need it...

Everything else is the same as a stick, personally I feel that the automatic is better because it frees your hands up to actually drive, and pull the e-brake when you want to drift...

I race against other 7th gen civics, and one 98 ex with an integra ls swap, and we all pull the same times. Don't let people convince you that you can't race an auto, alot of people do.

I compete at every local AutoX. My car has a stick but there are two Ford Focus' in my class one is auto and the other is stick, and lately the guy with the auto has been beating the guy with the manual. I have a VERY hard time shifting into first gear if my car is going more than 5 mph, so in AutoX I'm always in 2nd gear which sucks after a sharp slow turn. I think an auto would be better in that situation because as soon as you come out of a sharp slow turn, all you have to do is floor it and it will "automatically" go into first. Don't get discouraged, it takes a while before you start to get good. My first AutoX, I lost to a GMC pickup truck, and every other person there. Now, I've won my class at all five events this year. Be patient and ask to ride along with someone else, or ask them to ride with you at least once so they can help you out.
Good luck!

Autocross, real racing, it actually involves turns and brakes, a lot more skill required than driving in a straight line for a 1/4 mile.

heh, I'm going to get toasted for that...

I hope you realize that drifting is actually hurting your time. I autocross in my automatic civic. Here's a suggestion. Since it is your first time, I suggest you put it in second. It's a lot easier to learn how to control your car that way. On your final run go ahead and run it in D or D3. It doesnt matter which, there is no way you are going to get past second gear anyways. Oh, one more thing. HAVE FUN! Don't get upset if you go out of bounds and get a DNF. You will probably come in last or pretty close. It is a learning experience. Also, while you are there, check to see if there is an autoX clinic and definitely attend. It will help you out a lot

What do you think I'm doing, drifting every turn? Only on 1 maybe 2 turns, that my car still understeers on. Drifting a turn can increase your time if you know what you're doing. Watch some WRC, and take notes....
