As taken from the California State Vehicle Code:

Sect. 26708:
a-1: no person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied
upon the windshield or side or rear windows.
a-2: No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon
the vehicle which obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view through the windshield or side windows.

While certain sections of the visability laws do not apply to the rear side windows, the laws were worded in a confusing manner. I am not familiar with the California Vehicle Code. In my opinion, modifiying your car as you showed you attract unfavorable attention from law enforcement and more importantly, pose a safety hazard.

Yeah, they're called "slick tops." We use them too. It's basically a marked police car on the sides, and has hidden interior lighting such as the hide-a-way strobes in the headlights, turn signals and brake lights as well as on the visor and rear deck. They have no overhead lightbar which makes it easy to ride with traffic with the radar on, or follow someone driving recklessly, etc.

If you think about it, that law if it dealt with the rear quarter panel would cause ppl to have tickets for hanging up suits on the rear hangers. So I think your right on how it is legal. It's very sketchy and I guess arguable in court.

Good point on that...an officer in New York would be able to issue for a suit blocking one of those windows, however. I've never heard of it being done though.

[hr]Are you a police officer? Please don't say it's "not illegal at all," because I can think of things that it would violate in my jurisdiction (New York State). [hr]
I disputed a ticket from a "rookie" cop about having my windows tinted. At traffic court, the judge said that I cannot have anything obstructing the winshield, front driver and passenger side windows.

I asked the judge about the rear windows and he stated "you can tint those as dark as you want as long as you have a PASSENGER SIDE mirror".

So it is legal here in California.

Well, laws do vary from state to state. As for the "rookie" cop comment, they do just as good of a job as those of us who have been around a little bit longer.

Hey Qckslvr, I got a question...The way that law in Cali is written, the one you quoted, it would seem as if merely tinting the windows would be illegal, when in fact its legal in Cali to tint the rear quarters and back window as dark as you'd like. You could even paint them black, as my friend did, with zero visibility, and its legal.

The way the laws were worded were confusing. In New York, you wouldn't be able to have zero visability to the back.

Reason why I emphasized "rookie" is because after I got the ticket, I decided to get a second opinion. So I asked my friends father who is a seargent in another county and he stated that the ticket is invalid and that I should contest it in court. He then said "The officer may have been a rookie and did not know exactly if it was illegal or not".

Don't get mad at me for the comment, it was one of your fellow law enforcement comrades that made the comment.

Hmmm... how about putting one of those round port-hole windows like on the thunderbird hardtop? I dunno, I think that would make for a pretty huge blindspot. I used to drive a miata, with the roof up changing lanes was a b!tch - couldnt see that well. Similar set-up, rear window and well... black canvas on the rear quarters!

i personally think it looks okay... but not my cup of tea. from your pic.. covering up the quarter panel doesnt really seem to flow with the body design. i mean.. i dont know.. it just doesnt look right to me. i, myself, wouldnt do it because our civics already have a wicked blind spot when changing lanes but thats the case in most coupes. but hey.. if u must.. go for it. mass props for originality

Looks cool definately different in AZ you can have the windows all painted black on the back 3 they could care less and in most states too. Yeah those panel vans that have no side windows yeah they look like that but yeah a cop could probably pull you over since it didn't come from the factory that way but I like it Yeah no matter if I use my mirror or not I still look before I go I have saved my self on many possible accidents. Blind spots are bad news.
