Rep Power: 0 Auto vs. 5 spd
I know this has probably been touched upon numerous times but I'm gonna post this anyway. I want to know which you prefer Automatic or 5 speed? Having driven both, I have to say that I like automatic cars better. There is less to worry about, although after driving 5 spd for an extnded amount of time it becomes 2nd nature, and it can be a smoother ride. The only thing that i can see would be a benefit of 5 pd is the acceleration, auto is considerbly slower. I just want to know what everyone thinks.

Rep Power: 0 I have driven both, and i have to say that i like that 5-speed a whole lot more then the automatic. Then again, i was really motivated to learn, and to become good with a standard. I think it gives the car a sporty feel when you tell the car when to shift gears. Plus i race a lot, and i always got laughed at when i had my automatic in my old car, but not im laughin at then when they're reain my license plate

5 speed all the way. i owned 3 auto cars and 3 manuals and i like manual alot better, it gives you a better feel for the car. plus you can slow down alot easier with manual. Also theres less to break with a manual, and better gas mileage (if that really matters to you). After driving a 5 speed for 3 years now i'd never go back to an auto trans.
IMO:
Auto =
Manual =

Rep Power: 0 5-speed all the way...less to worry about, more fun to drive...the list goes on and on, and many people have already touched upon them already! I never got why people say there's more to worry about - after you learn the basics, simply practice makes it second nature...I don't even think about what's going on anymore, it's so easy! And there's nothing like the feeling of downshifting and scooting past an auto trying to impress you!

Rep Power: 291 After driving auto's for 6 years...I must say that buying (and learning to drive) a 5-spd back in Feb. was the best thing I've ever done. Driving is just not the same when you don't have control over the car. After driving a 5-spd for nearly 3 months, I don't feel right getting into an automatic. My left foot wants to press the brake, since there's no clutch. My right hand is constantly looking for something to move around. There is nothing like driving a 5-spd...TOTAL CONTROL is what its all about...

Rep Power: 0 after having 5 spd as second nature for several years now, it can me much much smoother than auto, and you have more control. i personally hate automatics. just a fun fact, did you all know that only 1 in 10 new cars sold anymore has a manual transmission in it?

Rep Power: 314 manual beats auto for many performance reasons. Obviously most of you know them. Personally, I enjoy manual, its more fun. Yeah people tell me "dont it suck driving in traffic?", no, not more than does it suck for everyone else (whether auto, or manual)! well thats my idea on that
Many of you know its better to drive manual in the severe weather (rain, snow) aswell . The snow is bad in Chi, and with stick you got all the control. And during the summer, you can enjoy the speed! I love it.
peace

In the realm of genetics and biology.... for some reason, it's been proven, women are better at mechanical and physical kinesthetics(such as stick shift driving) than men. Reason being is that they pick it up alot faster than men when they are learning. I tought my girl a lil bit of manual driving over the summer. she had it on her first try, no stallin while in first either! I was as suprised as you are. It took me long hours and several days to get the hang of stick.
You are right though, stick is easier to keep, and cheaper to buy and also cheaper on gas too.
Peace

sorry we dont have cars that are so powerful humans cant shift fast enough if they had a manual tranny (i.e. funny cars). also, if you want to be a drifter? sorry tail sliding has become boring now, cant truly drift w/o rwd

I don't think I have ever seen a pro import drag racer with an automatic.

Rep Power: 0 I feel like I am one with the car (knowing how stupid this sounds) when I drive 5spd, or better yet, 6spd.
Instead, I'm driving automatic right now and it feels like a loose cannon because the car shifts itself when it detects stuff and stuff, so I'd rather be the one telling the car when to shift rather the car telling ME when it wants to shift...

Rep Power: 0 the way i see it. if u own a civic, might as well let it be 5-speed. when i'm older and have more money to buy a luxury car, then i'll get an automatic to cruise around in. even if u had an automatic civic, u will..i repeat..U WILL get provoked by another civic, and most likely get humiliated.

It's sad that only 1/10 cars is manual now-a-days, but I believe it. In other countries almost no cars have autos, that's for lazy-azz Americans. It's also a good skill to have. Say your buddy is passed-out and needs a ride home but uh-oh, his car is stick.
Once you get good at a manual, I don't think you'll ever go back.

Rep Power: 0 i have to stick with the auto. it is that the manual has more control, easier to break and just over all fun to drive. but i drive most of the time when i am working and i don't know.. my left foot is begging to step on something, but i got a free right hands to do whatever i want. it is racing proven that if 2 cars that share the exact hp at the wheels, the auto would over take the manual, because the auto can shift faster than a manual... i guess that's if they got the same gear ratio and same amount of gears too

Rep Power: 0 Automatic - if you want more relaxation in the car.. and your right hand on your girl.
5 Speed - If you are planning to fix your car up, or care about beating some other civics on the road.

This is incorrect. It is 'race proven' that, given two identical cars, the standard transmission will always beat the automatic transmission (provided that the standard tranny driver can shift quickly enough). It's not enough to just look at how long it takes to shift - you also have to keep in mind that a standard transmission suffers less drivetrain loss than an automatic transmission. Plus standard trannies always have one extra gear than an automatic tranny of the same make/model. This is what gives standard transmissions the advantage of shorter gearing.
For example, a 5th gen Prelude standard is about 1 sec. faster than its automatic counterpart in the 1320. Same deal with the new IS300 manual vs. the original automatic IS300. I have yet to see a comparison test where the automatic version is faster than the standard version.
