update on 16 yr old's death

now that the official police reports have been released regarding the accident and interviews have been conducted with the survivors, there is a new, even sicker twist to this story. it turns out that the kid didn't slam on his brakes because he saw a cop in the oncoming lane. that was the first story given to police by witnesses who thought that was the reason he slammed on his brakes and it was spread by the media right away.
it turns out that he was driving in the left lane, "at a high rate of speed" when a much slower driver from the right lane pulled into the left lane, right out in front of him, seemingly taking the law into his/her own hands, trying to slow him down. he slammed on the brakes and swerved to the right to avoid hitting this car and that's when he lost control, spun out, and slammed driver's side door first into a tree. how f-ed up is that?
it doesn't dismiss the fact that he was driving at an idiotic speed but, wow, i hope that person feels like a complete a$$ for the rest of their life.

I don't know why someone would want to do that. If I see someone flying up in my rearview, I want to be out the way and as far away as possible. If that person hadn't of moved over into the lane, that kid would probably still be alive. On the other hand, if he wasn't going that fast he would be alive too. It's a sad story that is just all to common.

At the most, they might be able to issue a summons, but that's a real stretch. People shouldn't play traffic cop on the road; and motorists have to anticipate the actions of other drivers; that is you have to identify potential problems before they occur.

First off 16 is too young... i mean to be behind the wheel...
Second speedlimits are there for a reason..."TO PROTECT PEOPLE, NOT FOR PEOPLE TO BREAK IT!"

Good thing no innocent people were harmed... cause that would suck, because innoncent people dying for the acts of stupid people is wrong...

It's stupid drivers like that who disobey the laws, who make our insurence rates go up at the end of the year.

I'm 18, i "try" to drive reasonably... but i see lil ****** act like asses behind the wheel

Agreed. Darwin steps in and helps out the gene pool a little.

I was almost nailed by someone running from the cops. I was in a 93 Civic and he was in some big old American car. I no doubt would be some form of cripple if I hadn't had a feeling that I should change lanes seconds before his car launched off a hill next to me followed by 8 cop cars.

Anyway, that guy either had ***** or a lack of brains to do what he did. Maybe he was just confused and changed into what he thought wasn't the kid's lane of travel. A car coming up on you at triple digit speeds might make you do something you shouldn't do. I think this also examplafies a past thread about how some people can 'control' their car at 100+ MPH. Just cause you think you can, it doesn't mean that someone else on the road will anticipate your every move.

as far as i know, the other driver is not being charged or held responsible in any way. i'm not sure but he probably just kept on driving.

<< Good thing no innocent people were harmed... cause that would suck, because innoncent people dying for the acts of stupid people is wrong... >>

well, he had 2 friends in the car. one was badly injured and the other only minorly injured... so "innocent" people were harmed, but thankfully not killed.

Does anyone know if they were wearing seatbelts? This should be a lesson for speeding what an anti-speeding campaign

As someone else said, 16 is way too young to be behind the wheel. I was an a$$hole driver at 16 and it was amazing that I never caused any serious accidents. At 16, you can't think like an adult, and you have no experience. With no experience, you can't driver defensively, or perceive potential problems and avoid them. In my opinion, there is a huge difference between a 16 year old driver and a 17 or 18 year old driver.

well i take all this heavily cuz i had a really good friend in hs die in an accident.... he was going down a dirt road and hit some potholes (as i was told) it was rainy the night b4 so it was slick and he hit a tree.... there were 6 ppl in the car and 3 died.... police reports say he couldnt have going more than 30... but no seatbelt and when yer face meets the steering wheel then there are probs... then his car caught fire and well... the rest is history... and 30 is fast on a road like that but i still would never say my friend was stupid for going faster than the 20mph speed limit and i wouldnt call him an a**hole for not wearing a seatbelt... reguardless if he was 16, 25, or 80... ppl make mistakes.... but saying all that doesnt change the fact that there is a 16 year old boy dead now and true to fact.... its someone elses fault...

I'm 20 years old and i'm still a f*cking idiot driver at times. I see 30-40-50-60 yr olds that drive like f*cking idiots all the time. Personally i think i drive worse now than i did at 16. Saying a 16 yr old is too young to drive is a VERY arrogant standpoint. In fact, some of the best drivers are the ones that learned to drive at like 12 years of age on the family farm. If you cant drive at 16, you wont be able to drive at 18. Cockiness and the desire to show off doesn't disappear in 2 years.

Having said that, the 16 yr old was not exhibiting much intelligence at driving at the excessive rate of speed that he was....however vigilante justice such as was served out by the car in front of him is a travesty. Totally unacceptable.

I didn't start driving until I was 17. I am definitely a safer driver now than I was when I was 17.

I don't know the full details of the story, but from what I have read, the kid was driving at fast speeds on a pretty much empty road. He was in the left lane and there was a car in the right lane. As he was coming up, the guy in the right lane decided to play cop and pull out in front of him, causing the kid to swerve out of the way and end up losing control and killing himself. To me, that other guy should be charged with something. There was no reason for him to pull out in front of the kid, even if the kid was doing over 100 mph. Like I said though, I don't know the details so who knows what really happened. Too bad for the kid and his friends though. I don't go past 100 anymore and I rarely break 90. I try to keep it in the 85-90 range when I am cruising on the interstate.

No one killed the kid. Based upon the facts of the accident that were provided thus far, I do not find it to be a homicide. Of course, I am not there, so my opionion doesn't really amount to much. Any experienced driver will tell you that you have to expect people are going to swing out in front of you and stuff; you have to drive defensively and expect the unexpected.

Everyone here that says it's all the kids fault...man you people need to rethink some stuff. Whether you anticipate other drivers or not there is no excuse for anyone to take the law into their own hands....never. That's why we have cops, that's why we pay taxes to pay cops...get it. Everyone is a stupid driver at some point..no one is careful all the time and no one is a perfect driver. I bet our cop on here as done some dumb stuff at one point especially at 16...I bet you money that had that jacka$$ not pulled out in front of him he would still be alive...
How many motorcycle wrecks are a result of someone pulling out in front of them...Although you can prevent your own stupidity most of the time, you can't prevent someone else's stupidity.

I was a horrible driver at 16, however, in a situation like this, everyone is going to have their own opinion and it is hard to come to a consensus regarding the sole and proximate cause of the accident. The cops can't be everywhere at one time, but that isn't a reason for civilians to play "police officer" and enforce the traffic laws. The person who pulled out in front of the driver probably wasn't acting with intent to cause injury or death to the operator of the other vehicle.

yup, you got it. it was about 4 pm on a saturday and that short stretch of I95 was pretty much dead... it always is, really.

and to whoever asked if they were wearing seatbelts (i forgot who it was)... yes, they were all 3 wearing their seatbelts. apparently it was just the blunt trauma to his body that killed him instantly when he wrapped the driver's door around the tree at 80+ mph. ouch.

i have laid awake nights though, thinking about the other 2 kids and what they must have been going through being trapped in there for an hour and a half with his dead body.

Like the person in the car that cut him off even knew what was going on in that car????.......
What happend if it was a husband taking his wife to the hospital because she was about to give birth??? RIGHT?

What happend if it was a 16 year old kid who just recieved the news on his cell phone from his mother that she was dying and she needed him by her side.........

I hope those people that cut him off get what they have coming to them.......

I am sure that if all you people that said f*ck that kid, would think diffeerently if one of the examples above were true.......

there was a man once who's wife was giving birth near my house. of course he was speeding as fast as he could go, running reds, trying to get to teh hospital as fast as he could. so he ran another red light, this time, someone else who got the green started to go. This man colided with this other car, killing himself, his wife, his child, and the two people in the other car.

there is no excuse for driving that fast. none. even if your mother is dying. even if your wife is giving birth. even if YOU are giving birth. no excuses.

unless you are trying to tell me that you CAN put a price on a human life.......
