Muffler installation.

I have a 1998 Honda Civic LX sedan. I recently brought it to a Honda dealer for a muffler (only) install. The dealer charged 2 hours labor time. I know that this muffler is held on by only 2 bolts, so I would like to know if this charge seems excessive. I know the charge is for an hour or part thereof.

I have put on many mufflers in my life and the only one that took anywhere near 2 hours was a 1970 VW Beetle (an awful job).

Even when I had to hacksaw off a pipe or use a nut-breaker to remove bolts (lying under the car with 4 inches of clearance) the job never took 2 hours.

Thanks for your opinion.

Re: Muffler installation.

Wait... how much did they charge you? You specified time, but not the actual cost.

If it's a simple bolt on procedure, it should be less than $100 or free because it's very easy to do yourself.
It should take no longer than 30 minutes for even the most inexperienced workers.

If it involves cutting the pipe and welding on a new muffler, it is usually around $100-200 depending on the difficulty and rates. This usually takes about an hour or two. Also could be free if you've got a welder and some a spare time on your hands.

But anything over $200 is very questionable, especially for a simple muffler installation.
