I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
Gas is expensive right now, surprised how much gas just used just from idling the extra min or two here and there.
Funny thing is, I see people all the time, park their car, run into a bank or walmart or 711, get a few things, 5-10mins later come back out. This one time, this guy parks at the very back of a huge Home depot lot (next to me), leaves his huge v8 truck running, 25mins later comes back. And more often than not, they just let their car running with no one inside.

trying to find dumber people that makes you feel better might be good fer you.

i dont know wtf everyone (more like someone) is bitching at?
during idle you car only uses up .25 GPM (gal per min) which isnt that bad.
////////edit
i meant to say "GPH"

Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
you DO know a lot of cars that have turbos (like big turbo trucks) have something called a TURBO TIMER, which will keep the engine on and let the oil and fluids cool down to proper temp before automatically shutting off the engine????

That would be one quart per minute.
One gallon every four minutes.
No, just no.
It's FREE when you steal it.
Just so I have a worthwhile contribution to this thread: I can sit in my '12 idling in traffic or waiting for a train, and watch the average MPG per tank drop on the IMID display, 0.1 MPG at a time.

Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling

this is why im not allowed to POST at midnight, which is way past my bed time.
what i meant to say is GPH (gal per hour) i dont know why i put mins...
but back on topic, when our cars first warm up, the fuel pumps about .40ish GPH.
when it fully warms up, it pumps anywhere from .25-.20 at idle depending on the water temp and air intake temp.

Makes a lot more sense now. Thx.
That GPH parameter must be calculated from IPW x RPM (or something) by the unit. That isn't in the datalist on the HDS.

Yea at long stop lights I usually shut off my engine but not always. I'm beginning to think the ignition switch won't last forever. So i guess new Civics should include auto start-stop so no one has to worry about it. Of course it should have a disable button for those that don't like their engine to shut off. The engine starts up quicker than a normal car would thanks to the upgraded starter motor, and almost silent crankage noise too.
I too see a lot of people run their engines for no reason whatsoever. I was on an onramp for a highway and the highway was totally stopped because the bridge was lifted up ahead. Everybody was stopped but this guy next to me in a old V8 carbureted car, smelling up the whole onramp left his engine running for the entire 15 minutes it took for traffic to begin to move. Ugh! I did hear a few people turn on their engines when traffic moved but many must have left it on like that guy.
sl33pyriceboi mentioned as low as 0.20 gallons per hour. That is still a significant amount of energy. 33.7KW-h per gallon of gas so 6,740 watts constantly. Think of 4 hair dryers on constantly. Not too bad I guess for stop lights but for long periods of time it's kind of a ridiculous waste.

Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
you need to have a hybrid with hi volt battery pack (and a more powerful starter) to have auto stop. the regular battery and starter will not be able to turn the motor over like that. doing this in a regular car will cause the starter to fail early. and cause your battery to drain/die if you do it too often. just shift to N for long lights to save the trans, and only turn the car off if you are at a long RR crossing or expect to be waiting more than 5 mins.
Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
I have a lifetime battery warranty with Costco as long as I turn in the battery every 2.99 years
. Not worried about starter life because it's only engaged for about 1 second each time. Yeah good advice, I'm trying to hold back the urge to stop my engine for short periods.
Vehicles with auto start-stop come equipped with reliable, larger starters. Maybe the auto start-stop cars do have little lithium battery packs. I would think they could just use a capacitor that would power the starter so the battery doesn't see a drain and the alternator would charge up the capacitor again.
This is the Ford Focus 1L Ecoboost in Europe with Auto start-stop. Check out time marker 4:05 and 4:55 for action

Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
You ppl who worry about fuel consumption at idle... You are rediculously.
The fuel consumed is negligible and at most pennies worth of operation. Turning on n off your car repeatedly will wear out and lead to most costly repairs.
You're worrying about things that are not worth even mentioning about.

Imagine how much gas police officers use when idling! V8 crown vics, chargers. Taking a guess at 1/3 a gallon per hour that could easily add up to gallons a day per police vehicle since they idle their vehicles so much. An auto start-stop system makes perfect sense for law enforcement as long as it is rock solid reliable, which is certainly attainable. The system would pay for itself in no time imo even if they had to replace Li/NiMH pack every 10 years to power the electronics while the engine is off.

Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
most ppl waste gas like there is unlimited supply, then complain they have to pay so much. i really dont care about any of em. i hope gas goes to $10 a gallon soon. maybe it will teach people to think about these things.

but im with you, i have a motorcycle that gets 40+ mpg while speeding...
Re: I never realized how much gas we use up when idling
"Cylinder deactivation" or "variable cylinder management", the engine keeps the valves closed for half the cylinders to reduce pumping losses. I can't find any information that tells me that the computer will deactivate the cylinders while idle, just while driving. Could be wrong though but I'd think engine vibration would increase at low RPM. Remember that the entire mass of the engine is still moving and fuel economy is only around ~20% (or less) better than a V8 without the technology.
Them Vics don't have cylinder deactivation. The Chargers/Challengers with the Hemi does. I believe modern Impalas do (V6 and V8 models).
