Engine Noise AFTER Timing belt install ??

Hi folks ! I recently replaced the TB on a 2001 CR-V, engine had 100k, always ran well never had any major problems. I replaced the water pump while inside.

After I finished I started the car everything was good, running well, no codes, etc.The engine is quiet at idle. When I take the car out on the highway when the engine is under load between 2500-3000 rpm I get a fairly pronounced valve noise (sounds like valves to me right away) So, I adjusted the valves first thing in the a.m. (dead cold) Intake .005 exhaust .008. A few of the exh. valves seemed a bit tight, nothing unusual. But the noise remains, I guess it could be something other than valves but it sure sounds like valves to me.

Its got me guessing wildly like maybe its the power steering pump (which is a bit low, but I doubt it) I can't bring on the noise when the car is parked reving the engine.............So I am stumped and a bit afraid to take the car on longer runs at the moment although the car is running excellent other than this noise issue.....Any thoughts...Thanks

Make sure you check them after you tighten the locking nut to 14 lb-ft.

JR, I based the clearance on the above thread, not sure if civics and CR-V'S differ much

the manuals must though.I think my problem is the timing needs to be manually adjusted

at the distributor which I was told (by a friend who is a mechanic) was not nesessary.

Thanks for thr reply !!

Your friend is correct.
The distributor should never ever need adjusted.
If the ignition timing is off spec, something else is wrong.
20-30 degrees off would mean the timing belt is off by at least a tooth.

You said the noise happens under a load......I bet your noise is detonation, from cam timing way off. Recheck all the timing marks, top and bottom. One cam always wants to turn on those DOHC engines. If you don't hold it by hand while installing the belt, you get it wrong.

Valves: 16
Torque: 133 ft-lbs. @ 4500 rpm

Re: Engine Noise AFTER Timing belt install ??

well, this really turning into a PIA, I looked at the marks and it seems like a crapshoot !

I mean I just couldn't say ABSOLUTELY that it was lined up.I will try to adjust it w/ a light

but it seems I will have to take it apart again.I see they an access to the tensioner bolt

but I doubt I can accomplish it that way, seems like POOR DESIGN to me, sour grapes for

sure ! Good grief !

Re: Engine Noise AFTER Timing belt install ??

If you didn't touch the distributor already, then it is not your problem.
A timing light will only tell you if the ignition timing is "really close" or "way the hell off". DO NOT ADJUST THE DISTRIBUTOR!

All your complaints started AFTER you did the timing belt? Your problem is in what you touched. Revisit what you touched. Don't go looking elsewhere. You didn't touch the distributor. (Well, you SHOULDN'T have touched it.)

The CRV isn't hard to do. Read a service manual. Use a straightedge and a mirror to inspect the cam timing marks.

I will have to wait till the wife gets home from work, I mean this is really strange.I will have to go get a manual I guess though I don't think it includes anything I haven't seen in online tutorials.
I've been doing this for 25 yrs DIY, never had an issue like this.....Thanks guys

"A timing light will only tell you if the ignition timing is "really close" or "way the hell off". DO NOT ADJUST THE DISTRIBUTOR!"
Edit: The timing light method would only indicate if the one cam is out of time.
You can't judge the cam that doesn't drive the distributor by ignition timing. You still have to yank covers off and look.

Re: Engine Noise AFTER Timing belt install ??

I had the cover off to adjust the valves the other day, the timing marks looked fine, its a **** poor arrangement by comparison.

I will check it with a light and attempt 16 BTDC and see, if that doesn't help I will re-do the whole thing I guess.I can't imagine its off by a tooth if it runs perfectly, we'll see ...........Thanks
