Re: first car advise
www.lubecontrol.com additives for the gas and oil. get the gallon jugs and use regularly. at first it might seem expensive, but it will put the engine back in shape and the extra gas mileage will pay for itself.
Re: first car advise
You don't.There's no such product that "restores" an engine by simply pouring a bottle or two in.If the engine is old then it'll need new seals/rings and machine work to fix. That said using good fluids from the get go can and will prevent damage.I just checked my valves the other day...no a scrap of carbon on them,I always use good gas.Cheap mods that make a difference.I'm assuimg you mean power wise but i'd honest stay clear of modding a non-performance minded engine. If you want performance swap in something sportier, that way you get the go and still have the oem reliability.Good mods to start with are GOOD tires. They are everything really. They help you stop quicker and handle better.Another good begining mod is a sway bar.Fairly easy to install, cheap and you will notice it right away.Hope this helps.
Re: first car advise
well, regardless of the engine in there I think your best bet is to step up the piping size, add a resonator and a really good muffler(Not a straight through fart can, you'll just look/sound like every other **** bucket ricer on the road.Look into "Hushpower" mufflers, they are really quiet and flow alot more than your stock one will.Basically it'll be custom, cheaper than some aftermarket exhausts but you'll sound so much better and not look like a kid who welded a fart can on his stock exhaust.

1.test drive
2.make sure they're doing regular maintenance, plugs, oil, oil fliter, tires
3.see if they have receipts for a timing belt change and water pump since it's over 100k
4.if these all look good, buy carfax! no joke $50 last time i used it and tells you what the owner won't or doesn't know about previous accidents. it can save you a lot of money.
as well driving it to a mechanic to check for structural problems is a good idea if there is no carfax.

yes.The Muffler is just that, the muffler(the canister at the end) whereas the catbac is the entire exhaust system from the catalytic converter back(it will bolt to the cat or if you have a header the test pipe). The catback will be more expensive but should sound nicer and give you a slight bump in power(not much though).
Also,I'm not sure what the DC muffler looks like but it may involve you having to have it welded on your stock exhaust.

What kind of financing are you getting for it? (im an accounting major)
Modification wise, nothing. The best thing you can have at your age is a reliable car. I had a 1989 Mitsubishi Montero at your age that was a complete lemon. Nowadays that Montero is rare and I sold it to a collector for 6grand. Ive had it stall on major single overhead interchanges during rush hour, and then some. Let me tell you its not fun. Oh and im only 21yrs old.
My 2001 Ex civic is @ 144K mi, it seems the more miles I put on it, the better she runs!
