honda civic gas mileage 1978-2007

http://www.mpgomatic.com/2007/10/16/...age-1978-2007/

amazing how much more efficient the older hondas were with 1.5L engines. way better than todays hybrids with 1.3L engine. the hx and more notably the vx and even regular coupes were getting insane gas mileage in 1980s over 50mpg in the city and 60mpg on the highway. new civics are lucky to break 30s. and dont tell me newer civics are faster and thats why they get lower mileage. that isnt true because newer cars are much heavier to make up for it. in fact older civics i bet would feel faster.

Re: honda civic gas mileage 1978-2007

Just look at how much they have grown. Also look at how many more features they have than they used to. I bet you if those older cars had the weight and features the newer ones did they wouldnt get as good mileage either. It's a tradeoff I guess. I don't think the actual engines were more efficient... I just realized this thread was bumped from 2010! FAIL!

Re: honda civic gas mileage 1978-2007

Mainly it's that cars these days are way fatter with safety features. Heavier frames, crumple zones, ruin your mpgs but keep you from becoming a steel/human sandwich when you get hit.

Re: honda civic gas mileage 1978-2007

Keep in mind that the EPA test cycle has changed since 1978 to become more accurate. I'm not saying that those older cars wouldn't do better for MPG's in the same conditions as new cars, but they rarely, if ever achieved those 50-60MPG numbers. Same as trying to compare American MPG estimates to cars using the European test cycle. They use a different test cycle and their MPG's look a lot higher, when in acuality, they're using the exact same car. It's like trying to say, a Honda in 1978 cost $4000, why are they $16,000 now?!? A dollar in 1978 isn't a dollar today.

geez, this is completely off-topic to this thread.
At the least, find another "having mileage trouble", not an informative thread...

Re: honda civic gas mileage 1978-2007

02_d17a1_dx = should i take it to the honda dealer and check it out, cuz i took it to my mechanic and he said it was ok but obviously its not

LTDan = yea i understand that but everyone else who owns my car gets way better mileage so maybe im thinking an oil leak or etc.

sdaidoji = i was going to go to another thread but i figured since this was a mileage thread it would be logical to ask about it and then move elsewhere

My post was in response to the original post Oil leaks aren't going to cause poor milage. They'll cause your engine to blow up eventually. As for your issue, I would take a look at the most common causes. Start by checking and/or changing the fuel and air filters. Then look at checking/cleaning the throttle body, Mass air flow (careful, they're delicate), and doing a service that will clean your fuel injectors (an actual service, not that stuff you buy every tankful at Autozone). Beyond that, if you don't have an engine light on, there's not many more parts to easily check Unless, of course you're redlining your car at every stop light. Then the easiest fix is to stop doing that.

I'm calling bullshit on this because my car gets MAX 550 km/tank on the highway and its been getting that since brand new. I clock my km / mpg every fillup... I havent looked at my gas gauge in 2 years because I just watch the kms... that and my car goes only to work and back on the highway so its all highway kms.

depends...
I got during my trip from TN to Canada a whooping 40.636MPG or 17.176km/l on my EX.
My auto LX (longer final drive - long gone ) got up to 44MPG on another 1200 miles trip.

from banff to regina i average over 50mpg... thats driving at 62mph with the cruise on, done that trip a million times and its exact every time... never changes by more that 3 or 4 mpg,. and thats because of wind or rain. ex.. i filled up at the shell just east of the deerfoot in calgary 2020 16th ave and drove to the first shell in medicine hat 704 redcliff dr.sw 285km and used 3.9 gallons.. you can now do the math.. and this is pretty standard for my car.. i dont question it, it is what it is.. but i have also fixed every friken thing on this car because its always broken... it hasent been very reliable unfortunatly..
