GM getting rid of ABD and side SRS!!

How cheap can they get?? Making ABS and side SRS optional on all their cars except for Cads and Corvette.

They say it will save like $160 per car, but you know they will charge like $500 for each because now they are "options". Risking lives to save a couple of $$$, why not get rid of cruise control or big alloy wheels standard? And then making big bucks to sell the same thing as options!! Imagine them not making seat belts standard, and then making them "options" for like $1000!!! - doesn't add up.

ABS is like 50 year old technology, why should a safety item that is so cheap to add be optional?

At least GM offers it as an option! If I remember correctly, you couldn't get ABS for a civic DX or LX even if you wanted to pay for it. Just trying to keep things in perspective.

Look at it this way: An enthusaist driver like myself isin't interested in ABS or side airbags. It's still available to the people that want it, but by making it optional it gives me a choice in the matter.

Not to defend General Motors cause I'm definately not a fan. I've driven Ford vehicles all my life...this is my first non-Ford car. My 02 HX doesn't even have ABS available and side SRS are optional. Things like power windows also aren't even an option.

I bought my car for it's reliablility and fuel economy, but my eyes still bugged out of my head when the dealer told me it would cost $500+ for a CD player and $1000+ for A/C. Not to mention hundreds of dollars for stupid things like splash guards, door mouldings, etc. etc.

But more comapnies are making it standard, and a company that has had it for years suddenly takes it away so they can make more money. Most people that buy cars don't know about things like ABS until they need it.

The answer is one, the government doesn't require ABS yet, and two a hunch by GM that that car buyers care more about the $300 price difference, or whatever it is, than having ABS brakes. It's a business decision, which don't forget, all the other manufacturers have already made. I don't think ABS will ever be standard unless the government mandates it.

I don't know about all of you but personally I like the idea. You have to look at it this way there are a lot of people out there that would prefer to not have airbags in their car, me being one of them. If it is an option and you want it then get it. In Cali at least it is illegal to remove airbags from a car that came factory with them. In other owrds I can;t go buy a lighter weight steering wheel unless I want to go pay $3,000 for a Momo or something with an airbag in it. Honda has bullsh!t things too though like PESTLNC said $1000 for air and ABS isn't available on any civic except the EX I wanted all wheel disc brakes but that wasn't possible since I was buying a DX. Sunroof nope not that either had to buy an EX. Well I didn't want the EX I wanted a DX with 4 wheel disc brakes and a sunroof but I couldn't have it. Same concept.

Airbags are mandatory, there's no going back there. ABS is not mandatory in the US and as far as on the way to becoming manadatory, I used to think that way too, but in the end it either is or is not mandatory, there is no such thing as 'becoming mandatory' and as long as the republicans are in power, whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing, ABS will not be mandatory.

i hate domestic (US) cars as much as everyone else here... (and of the three, i hate GM the MOST!) but CivicMike, you sound like a kid with down's syndrome shouting "heeeey look at you wee-tawds!!!!"

alright, that was a bit harsh, and i don't mean to insult any corky fans out there, but remember that HONDA doesn't even offer ABS on any other civics besides the EX and Si. And just like GM is planning on doing, side airbags are NOT standard equipment on the Civics. So, what exactly is your point!? GM sucks, but in this case, Honda's no better.

...not to mention honda's infinite rainbow of color choices!

henry ford was quoted "you can have any color you want, as long as it's black" when questioned about color choices for the original model t. one color kept costs down -- and today, 6 color choices costs the carmaker waaay less than offering 20 colors. so speaking of companies being cheap, here's to honda. thanks for offering 6 boring colors and 3 equipment/feature packages.

not that i'm complaining -- i love my civic, and feel it was worth every penny -- but as i said before, don't point at the wee-tawds if you're a wee-tawd yourself!

heh.. wee-tawds...

I never said anything about airbags....???

What I was pointing out is..... Why would they take away a technology that cost them almost nothing (parts from Taiwan and built in Mexico) that is proven to save lives (airbags can kill), to save consumers money - then in the next sentence they want to charge 5X as much to put the same item back on as an option!!

You bought a DX to save money, remember Honda doesn't have options, only dealer installed accessories!! If you add up the prices of all the stuff a DX doesn't have, you equal an EX - except if you buy them from a dealer.

And watch the comments!!
