feelin the SOHC!!

ok i actually have two questions here...replies on either would be great.
1. Ok when im riding in my friends 2000 prelude, and the V-Tech kicks in around 5000 rpm, you can feel the hell out of it...my question is, yes i already know a lot of it has to do with DOHC, but if we get our cars up to about 190-200 hp, will we feel our V-Tech kick in like that? Or is that only for those lucky people with DOHC?
2. If the engine swap is good, and works from a RSX Type-S, why not just switch with a Type-R engine? they are bringing the Type-R here eventually, why not just put that in and have 220hp with more torque out of a stock engine, and work up the internals?
thanks everyone!!

1) The D17 engines have 3-stage VTEC, which is not your traditional VTEC. You won't feel a night-and-day effect at a certain RPM point. Instead, there are several points at which the VTEC switches between one of three modes.

2) Sure, why not? If the swap works for the K20A2, it should work for the Type R motor. You gotta start somewhere, though.

Do any of yall think that the new CRV K23 would fit in the civic bay? They are supposed to have the same chassis.

hey thanks htown...speakin about engine swaps...hows it goin with yours? im seriously thinkin about doin the same thing when my warranty is up. I really like the way DOHC kicks in, and sounds. Plus 200hp in our cars would be nice. Thanks again for the clarification on those questions.

supercivic...to my understanding, you can put a V-12 in our engine bay if you have the cash. (not really, but you get what im sayin)

u feel the difference because when the wild cam lobe is engaged, you're gaining more than 20 hp. and instant boost in 20 hp can be felt.

a boost of 5 hp can't be felt.

looking at the dynos though, we dont even get any dramatic boost. it just climbs up gradually. heh.

i mean, its the engine being single cam is one of the reason, but the best way to describe it is that, our VTEC isn't design for high power gain.

i mean, they can probably make a high output sohc engine. but er. yeah, they (honda) dont. heh.

actually, there's some pretty high output engines. there's 1.5 liters that pump out 130hp. not bad at all.

The new crv is the same motor ad the rsx for the most part. So yes the swap should work.

Ok, once again, the VTEC in our Civics is not 3-stage. It's a simple SOHC 2-stage VTEC.

Right now, you can only find 3-stage VTECs in D15B engines in Japan and certain countries in Southeast Asia.

you have economy VTEC...not the VTEC meant for performance

<< The VTEC principle has been applied in a number of variations to create different engine characteristics for individual vehicle models from super efficient to race bred systems. The s2000 , NSX , Prelude VTEC , GSR And Si Have the High performance system. >>

quote is from s2ki.com's VTEC faq

The SOHC was simply made for that awesome MPG we get. It's funny how VTEC means "perfomance" mainly, but that depends on the # of overhead cams and people should really learn that. For an SOHC, I'd be comfortable if I could get mine to 140HP. I'm not expecting a lot of performance out of it anyways, but hey... it doesn't make the Civic not fun to drive.

DOHC, baby!
