jetta vs civic
Re: jetta vs civic
I love VWs. There will be people who say they're super unreliable, and then you'll get the other end too. I love the older GTIs. They're such fun cars, and cheap to fix. You can buy parts for old VWs for really cheap, and they're not hard to work on at all. Honestly I feel like you can make VWs faster than a civic with less work too. I have a lot of VW friends pushing 400whp and such.
I also raced a 1.8T auto stock from what i could tell but i had i/h/e without my stereo and we ran equal to like 50-60mph. The biggest problem with VW is that they are so heavy.

Re: jetta vs civic
I remember watching one of those tuner shows and they upgraded an Audi A4 I believe which should have a similar turbo to the 1.8T I imagine. Anyway, after they pulled all the parts out the mechanics showed how tiny and restrictive the factory turbo parts were. It would cost you a fortune to build the car how they built it on the show. In the end they made about 400whp from what I remember upgrading the turbo and parts.
Re: jetta vs civic
Well if we talk about the new vr6,s they will pretty much stomp a civic si in the sedan form.LOL The new 3.6L vr6 is rated at like 280Hp and the new 3.2L is rated around 240hp both with matching torque. But they come with a price $$ lots of mula.LOL The 1.8T is not a bad starter car.Forged internals and it can take a beating.Stock is 10psi spike and 7psi hold. With a chip the stock turbo will max out at like 17spike and 14-15 hold. With a good driver its suppossed to be a high 13 sec car. The old 2.0l were single over head and rated at 140hp I think there the economical gas engines.LOL. But the new 2.0L dohc turbo motor is a beast. With 200hp,207 Torque. Matched with six speed and its a stock low 14 sec car. And if you want to compare an old Si civic 99-00 to a vr6 you would have to choose the all wheel drive R32.Because in those years they were the top models to get. And lets just say its no comparison. The R32 takes the cake in that challenge.Sure the VW,s might lack in longevity but there a whole lot more fun to drive in the short run.You just dont want to keep it over a 100k miles.LOL. This is terrible coming from me too.Im a honda driver for LIFE. I guess what it comes down to is the brand you like the most. Its not really a power issue. Its either you like honda,s or VDubs. Its all in the eyes of the beholder.

Re: jetta vs civic
^^ yup but the VR6's are in a entirely different class (3.6 liters.... but still turbo the rsx type-S and u have more than 300hp with a lighter car...)so theres no need to compare... as for the 2.0L Turboed GTI's i still think thats garbage... like if honda can produce a N/A car with 200hp... then a 2.0L turboed car isn't so amazing... i mean people here on the site are turboing their 1.7L D17's and putting down more than 200hp.... so like i said no biggie.

Re: jetta vs civic
All this talk about hp and torque and bla bla.
I have yet to drive down the street and have one single jetta turn my head and say damn that looks nice.
ok maybee 1 or 2 but not from the new gen VW. (with exception of GTI/R32 they look cool)

Pros
The jettas are heavy, but they make a lot of torque pretty fast. And they are fun cars to mod. It already has a turbo and such, so change the intake and you'll get the blow off valve sound. Not to expensive to do that. If your still itching for more power go ahead and get a chip. They are suppose to make quiet a bit of power, and give you some degree of fiddling. They cost roughly 500 dollars and make a fair amount of hp, roughly 30hp, and a good amount of tq, roughly 45tq. That should put you in the zone where you'll be satisfied with the car. Another good think about the jetta is the steering feel and brakes. I enjoy the heavy steering, and the uber German brakes are one of a kind.
Con
Depending on the year of the jetta you might have a problem with the transmission. There is an inherent design flaw that makes the tranny weak, after 50k or so each gear will grind and you will loose reverse.(manual tranny of course) What I also hear is that VW's customer service is kinda whack. Haven't experienced it first hand so I don't know.
The civic is probably a more reliable car than the vw, at least from the start. What happens after you drive it off the lot and everywhere else, has an effect on reliability. Can't really guesstimate for anything like that. It definitely has less power and consumes more money to make power.
Bottom line, if you can take care of your car, work on it yourself, and look to get some cheap power the vw is definitely the way to go. If you just want someone that looks nice, and you can drive around easily in get the civic. Both these cars will look good when you visually mod them. Its just the vw will make globs of power with way less money spent.

07 CIVIC SI = 21K - 23/32 mpg - 197hp - 2877lbs
07 GTI 2.0T = 22K - 23/32mpg - 200hp - 3100lbs
same HP!!! the only diff is torque,
Horsepower @ rpm 197@7800 200@5100
Torque @ rpm 139@6100 207@1800
but with the 1K difference you can save it or just slap on a exhaust, header, intake
edit:
07 Sentra Spec-V (2.5L I4)
Price $20k
Horsepower 200@6600
Torque 180@5200
weighs 3100lbs
Mpg = 24/31

I still think the jetta would win. It hits its peak tq way earlier, and if you can control the torque with your left foot then your going to pull away sooner. Remember its not HP that gets your car from 0-60 quicker, its your TQ. Roughly 250pounds heavier isn't a big deal when you make an extra 68 ftlb of tq just slightly above idle compared to peak tq at near redline.
Plus you still have to account final drive ratio, and the gearing of each gear. With more torque you should be able to make the gears longer?(not sure about this don't know to much about trannys) However I guess with more tq it takes the car through the gears quicker, so the civics gear might be shorter because the car just doesn't have the tq to pull it through a long gear, while the jetta can have a longer gear still pull and make it to a high mph.
