Need an engine......
Need an engine......
Guys and gals, this is a great forum and for my first post I would like to say that my son and his car are a pain in the ***!
He bought a 2000 Civic SI from a Honda service tech that was mint.
Within 90 days of ownership, he has rear ended someone to the tune of 3200.00 and now has blown his friggin' engine, running it with no oil.
In my ever increasing effort to help him stay in school, I am trying to locate a used engine for him.
He has helped me pay for his insurance and the repairs needed thus far and will be paying for this(or at least most of this) as well.
If you guys could steer me in the right direction in terms of finding an engine, I would greatly appreciate it.
He is currently using one of my extra company vans, which I need back at some point.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Need an engine......
You should be able to find B-series motors anywhere you look. Are you looking for another B16A2? Or looking to upgrade to a GSR or Type R motor?
hmotorsonline.com seems to have lots of engines, but if you're trying to find a stocker, check the classifieds on honda-tech or something. You ought to be able to find one pretty easily.

Re: Need an engine......
where are you located? I know in certain areas there are some strictly honda junkyards. I have heard of them in southern cali and AZ
Re: Need an engine......
I am not very familiar with these cars. If I were, I probably would have steered him toward a straight up civic.
I would like to replace it with the same type vtech engine, although I am open to possible replacement suggestions. He has a friend who has an engine from an acura that is supposedly interchangeable.
I live in Miami and the local yards that specialize in Honda's have none of the same type engine.
The ones I have been able to find on the internet are in the 2500.00 range.

Re: Need an engine......
These motors arent very cheap anymore and the junkyards in most states have been picked clean. Any OBD2 VTEC B series should be interchangeable as far as I know, if anything needs to be tweaked it will be minimal. The one thing every Honda owner knows is checking the oil. Every fill up, ALWAYS. This happens soooo much its disgusting. You cant expect an engine to buzz up to 7500 rpms plus and not lose oil from crank vapor evac and such. Even the newer K series is the same way. Kick him in the nuts for me, haha. Be glad he doesnt have a RSX Type S, you'd be looking at over $3K for a descent engine.

"Kick him in the nuts for me"......LMFAO! Hellz Ya!
But for real, hes right!!
Slamming gears at 7K RPM is gonna have some consequences if your not maintaining the engine, As for oil....it like a pacemaker, if for any reason it stops.....DeaD like the internals of the engine! simple as that!
This also goes for rad fluid, brake fluid, etc...
takes all of what? 3-5 minutes to check em all once a week or so?
Sorry but....as far as im concerned, if the car/engine is neglected? then he deserved a cooked VTEC.
Wait to see the bill at the end of the day!
- New/used VTEC engine
- Misc parts (some missing, broken or simply just needed in the rebuild)
- Fluids (oils, rad, etc...)
- You may even need to buy/rent tools (cherry picker is a common one needed)
- Time is money, finding it is sometimes difficult too!
- Labour involved
good luck anyhow!
Re: Need an engine......
I appreciate the responses and tips.
He will be paying for it, I'm just trying to help him find the right one.
I found this one and may get it.

Does anyone have any experience with these guys?
It is a long block, so if it's compatible, it's a "drop in" correct?
Thanks

Re: Need an engine......
Honestly I dont have much experience with these. H series and D series has really been the norm for me lately. That should be an obd1 motor if I'm not mistaken. The Distributors are different I think. You may be able to swap the distributors. Search for Honda engine swap guides, there are places online to find info on how to swap motors over with parts lists ECU pinouts virtually everything. Hell Autozone near me has the book for like $12. Has pretty much all the common Honda stuff in it. That company is fine to deal with, I wouldnt be hesitant to order from them, people I know have had good luck with them.
Re: Need an engine......
Well the engine has been ordered. Supposedly it's a mid 90's engine with appox 40k miles on it.
The owner of the the company told me that all I have to change over from the old engine is the distributor, intake manifold and oil pump(with crank sensor) to keep the cpu working.
Of course I would get a new oil pump instead of using the old one.
Will let you guys know how it goes.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Need an engine......
just be careful of your states laws. i know in california, its illegal to put a older engine into a new car.
i think the only problem you might run into is converting your car from OBDII to OBDI.
I believe the 95's are OBDI engines and the 2000 si was a OBDII car.
