New GTI Diesel - why not here?
What has 150hp, 230 ft-lbs of torque, and gets 50 MPG??? (which begs the question why hybrid?)
The new GTI in europe! - it's a 1.9 liter TDI PD! - (they call it pump jet - how cool is that!)
GTI - VW UK
I wish they would bring this stuff over here! - they are just think Americans are too closed minded.....
so we get stuck with the 90-hp beater. But hey, Mercedes thinks the american market is roaring ready for a new diesel - they are bringing over the 270CDI (170 hp) in the new E class.....
THERE IS HOPE

Oh yeah and before you ask, PD is Pumpe Düse (Pump Jet)
And its actually 236 ft-lbs of the twisty stuff.. (the newest 240 hp oddessey minivan only outproduces it by 5 measly ft-lbs - imagine all that in something only a little heavier than our civics!)

they don't have any of the cool diesels here because they can't meet US emissions. Only the US looks for Hydrocarbons and diesels spew a lot of 'em. Ford is working on a diesel focus with a special scrubber that get's rid of hydrocarbons. Until then we can only get high gas milage from a hybrid.

WE have TDI's here. There are golf, beetle, and JEtta TDIs here. Though they don't make as much HP as the normal gas ones, they still get good gas milage. VW just modded it and upped the HP on their TDI technology.
because diesels suck!
they have the lowest power/weight ratio, diesel gas is harder to find, diesel burns your skin when you touch it, diesel stinks, diesels are noisier, diesels are a bitch when its reeeel cold out....

so they made diesel gas no longer burn your skin?? and they made it much easier on your eyes??? wow
Here in california in the bay area diesel gas is still not at every station.
Diesel Emissions Still Stink. Diesel Cars still have their normal engine sound thats louder than an idle gasoline engine. And you're telling me that on a 20 below freezing cold day a diesel motor is just as easy to fire up, and as ready to fire up when your butt sits in it, as a gasoline engine.

You my friend are so wrong it's not even funny. My parents own a Benz diesel. Yes the diesel is hard to find. The fuel has touched my skin and it hasn't burned it. It doesn't smell that bad. Yes it's noisy but I like the sound that it makes. Also it always starts right up. Takes a while for the pre glow light to go off (you do know what that is right?) but it starts right up. And that's real old tech diesel too.
The new ones don't even compare. In Europe more than 50% of cars are diesel. Why? They get 50mpg and can keep up and sometimes spank gas engines in acceleration.
Don't mess with the diesel.

But if you look at older benz's and old diesels, they always smoke because their engines wear a little quicker than regular gas cars. Look at diesel trucks, they always smoke and smell horrible. they do get great gas milage and can accelerate a lot quicker.

So true....
I didn't beleive it myself untill i test drove a new TDI on a -10 dergee day.
I ran to the car with the salesman, he opened the door, jamed the key in and if fired INSTANTLY.
No smoke at all eminates from them, and the odor is undetectable even when they are all around you (take a trip to munich) and they are not noisy at all.
My cousin just bought a 3500 duramax duley, the f0ing thing burns the tires.....
As for diesels caustic charachteristics, it's certainly no worse than gasoline (douse your eye in that)
The truth is, new diesels are good, really really good...

KEY WORD: OLDER..............
they don't wear quicker, infact thats why they are used in boats, they have a much longer life span.
the old ones smoke because they dont have the high pressure pumps and fuel control mechanisms as the new common rail diesels
the boat diesels last long because they sit at one rpm for a long time.....
when you pump diesel look for the special gloves, because that garbage can bother your skin....
Diesel repairs and parts can sometimes cost more because of speciality mechanics and parts
Diesels have a lower power/weight ration vs gasoline engines. They have gobs of low end torque, but they can't match the horsepower of a gasoline engine.
Diesel Engines cost more than gasoline engines to manufacture.
resale is harder, because there is a limited market
and tdi engines aren't supposed to idle for long periods of time... so much for california traffic

really?
TDI PD Iron Block 1.9 liters of displacement - 150 hp?
Seems to me the 1.8T (Iron Block) was putting out 150 hp just last year in most applications....and it could only see 50MPG going 40 down a hill with a tailwind!!!!!
and the tdi puts out way more torque...so wait, it's bad because what?
(i think you should go to a VW dealer and try out the TDI in the lowly 90HP variant (go on the coldest day)
it's stinky - no
cant find fuel - no (over 20% of fuel stations carry diesel)
it pollutes more - no it only has more particulate, sulfur, and NOx (but gasoline has more co, co2, and hc's)
it won't start in the cold - no hard to start diesels died in the 80's
it's life is shorter - a resounding no, they don't have shorter lives (google)
heavier - mmm perhaps.... certainly than aluminum block counterparts...
the fuel makes your hands burn - oh yeah!
in europe diesels now account for 50% of sales in some regions, there is a reson for that....
infact honda - with sales suffering badly from the absence of a diesel just introduced it's first C-TDI in europe C-tdi
i guess its your call...
93 HP gas/electric hybrid that gets 50MPG
-OR-
150 HP TDI-PD
I know what I'd buy if fuel cost 2.50 a gallon.....

Well I'm just speaking of the old benz diesels here, but they're much easier to maintain and repair than the gas ones. They also can go 1 million miles (there are a couple that have done this ) without any problem. Nobody really is interested in new diesels here because gas is still cheap. Make gas 4 bucks a gallon and we'll see who gets more sales.
