Is it possible to "double clutch" on Autos?
Was racin my friend the other day. Me with a stick and he with an auto about 1/2 way down the stretch he just boots it while i'm still red linning every gear.. so what's up with that? And all he said was.. it's an Auto's secret.. ????
now that is funny!
you have to have a clutch to double clutch (well, autos do have clutches but they're different)
TFATF lives on with its double clutching antics....
If he just stomped it and creamed you he might be squeezing, how good are you with a manual?

I'm more than average with a manual, but still an auto that just starts booting it when we're almost neck & neck? And yes i've heard auto's can "double clutch" somehow, just freak'n amazing how he does it.
Yes i know u need a clutch to do it, thus the ""'s.
So how is this done? I know how to do it on a stick but on an auto??

my friend was doing with his car (civc) , i think i saw him drop to d3 really fast, punch it and back up to d4 really fast........ its a way of changing gears and jumping rpms from 4-6
you cannot, I REPEAT, CANNOT double clutch an auto. You can trick an auto into revving between gears, but this usually requires a slightly worn tranny -AND- gives no performance gain, just sound cool (i guess :nono

If that's true how do you explain the jump in acceleration?
in my 68 I have a manual valve on my th400 tranny that lets me bang gears as I need.... thats what your friend is doing, only he's doing it the ghetto method (still not double clutching though)
Double Clutching is designed to give the synchros a chance in transmissions, but is not needed anymore really, barring some specialized applications.
edit : this post is a response to netcbc's friend

n00dleboy do you even know what double clutching is?
he could be squeezing, did you check out his car? Perhaps you just can't drive a manual, and he was banging the auto ghetto style (see above)
edit: how were you shifting? were you bouncing off the limiter before a shift? were you taking your sweet time between gears, or were you pulling out of gear and shifting with quick fluid motions?

yea i know what double clutching is and i know how to do it. Maybe he was just downshifting and getting his RPM higher and then shifting back up...
please describe how you were racing? if you both were all out dragging, he couldnt have downshifted, his foot would just be on the floor and he would have already ran the gear out.
If you just kinda did a rolling start, he probably just stomped it which of course kicks it down, and you may not have known enough about shifting a manual to subconsciously assess your speed, and choose the correct gear like an experienced driver would have done.

hrmm it was a rolling start so perhaps i was a gear too high to get all the juice i needed.
So tell me in auto's if driver 1 just stomps his foot on D4 and another starting shifiting from d3 .. the performance is the same?

i dont quite understand what you mean but...
say two autos are cruising along at a speed higher than the civics max for 2nd gear (i dont own an auto), one in D3 and one in D4..... both stomp it. The D3 civic will respons slightly faster b/c its already in 3rd gear, while the D4 civic will kick down to 3rd gear and go... of course once the race surpasses 3rd gear's speed the D3 civic will stop accelerating, while the D4 will upshift
does this help?

i use it all the time when i slow down...

dude. double clutch. drop the term already. if you know how to do it. thats spiffy. but dont tell me you were doing it when you were racing that auto. because you have syncros, I can't imagine anyone wasting their time doing that in a modern car like ours.
so if u were doing that while racing him, thats probably you lost. instead of immediately shifting into the next gear, you wasted ur time reving up while not putting any of the power to the ground.
now, if it was a rolling start... practice ur downshifts. know how high u can take each gear, and practicing the downshift release will be important too.
and finally, its kinda hard for our cars to just have a sudden speed burst. maybe he did downshift into d3 or what not. it might be faster than just stomping the gas and wait for the computer to downshift on its own. *shrug*
and er.. shifting to d3 isn't bad. obviously u shoudln't shift all the way down to d2 or d1 if you're at a certain speed, since u dont want to hit the rev limiter on the engine.. if I'm driving an auto, I'll be using d3 to climb a hill or something when I'm in a Honda, or when I'm going down a hill. keeps the rev up so I have more torque to get up the hill.
normally, I recommend using d3 for city driving, and d4 for highway... might waste more gas though.

<< surprised to only see 2 posts about nitrous, thats what i was thinking as soon as i read the post >>
you know, he still never answered my ? if his friend was squeezing a bottle ....
Face it folks, you gotta an auto tranny.
It wasnt made for you to click it around from gear to gear.
besides, if you have the throttle pinned, its not gonna shift into fourth unless you are close to redline.
And well back to the original post, I got another possibility, you sure you didnt double clutch using the brake pedal?
